electrics gone crazy

Post by 08broach »

A month or so ago the reg/ rec/ genny went on my bike, the regulator was letting out 30v in stead of 15 or something like that... any way the result was a batery that was all swolen a fuel pump which had burnt out... possibly due to a power surge or something.... also the tacho meter has stoped working... most likley due to being burnt out.

the bike now rides fine and i was using it yesterday, dispite not having a rev counter. But when it got dark i noticed that my diped beams didnt work... yet my full beam did? :smt017 also when i put my indicators on the both come on in no real rythem? and lastly and possibly quite dangerously... the rear break light isnt working either, possibly just the bulb has gone..

anysuggestions on what could be rong/ where? this is getting anoying cos all the parts are adding up in price since the break down ahah

many thanks

if your reg was kicking out too much voltage and made the battery swell and burnt the fuel pump out then i would have thought it cant have done your loom much good althought it should have blown all the fuses, have you checked the fuses?

i have a dud headlight relay here if you wanna try it its gone the other way round where the dipped work but the main don't, it'll eliminate the bulbs at least?
Don't forget people there is more to the zxr400 than this forum... check out www.zxrworld.co.uk also.

Checking the head light blubs is easy just reach in and take it out and have a look at it...............the filiment will be broken or not as the case may be.

If your lights were on during this 30V episode then it's no real surprise that dipped beam is not working and high beam is OK.............not certain but I'm sure dip and high are in the same bulb so either way the bulb will need replaced............therefore no point in testing them with a different relay. Unless you trying the different relay because yours is suspect In which case you'll be needing a new or fully functioning one

Every electrical curcuit that was switched on during this 30v thing is potentialy damaged.

Bulbs are cheap and easy to replace..............experience has taught me that Halfords will have the bulbs but they will be expensive try your local independent auto factor or car parts outlet...................they should have the bulbs and will be cheaper

Check all the indicator bulbs...............if they are all ok then it could well be the indicator relay thats faulty

just looked at all the bulbs, in both the head lights one filiment is broken... this would explain why full beam works and diped doesnt? is that right?
its the same in the tail lights... one filiment is broken... but surley the break lights would work or the tail lights as only one is broken?
thanks

ye thats why the lights arent working they must of been on when you had the power surge causing the filaments to burn out all of the bulbs with the broken filaments will need replacing, did you look at your indicator bulbs?

yeah its all sorted now, bought some bulbs from halfords but need to take them abck as they dont quite fit... the indicators just had water in the loom somewhere or something.. it was left in the rain for a while and got DRENCHED so i left it out on a windy sunny day and it has fixed its self.

glad to hear its all fixed.you might want to spray wd40 or similar into the connectors otherwise if they have had water in they might start to corrode.
