I have been trying to sort this for ages..
Sorted the wiring on the starter now that works every time on the button,
then one day i went out it stalled on the way at point A say
it restarted so i turned back to see the problem, it did it twice more on the way back seemed like fuel probs??
checked all the coil wirings and firing order to the manual as i had them off to sort all wiring on starter (clutch earth one)
totally stripped off the carbs and cleaned all jets and they look spanking new now
started her and after a while she purred off i went and the same happened again!!!
fuel filters are brand new fuel pees out of the tank perfect what else can i try a bonfire!!
any advice would be great summers here and i aint ridden this yet :smt013

Try driving towards point A - drop a gear and rev the tits off it. Bet that solves it

does it start and run fine when still?can you feel the fuel pump 'ticking' when its running?does it just splutter and cut out when riding or when your coming to a stop so it wont idle?

is point A on a hill? is point A in the middle of birmingham where they are likely to srain your tank while waiting at traffic lights??

point A is about a mile or so up a flat country lane where i live,
it idles fine more or less as well as a 400 can idle
at 8k it spits flames at a standstill
after it cuts out after say 10 secs she breathes into life like nothings happened then she will die again after less distance than on the outward journey?
i love my zx4 too so dont want to sell for bits shes too nice....
should i try at the begining with plugs, then coils seems like an ignition prob or is it fuel pump or...or...help its driving me nuts

Sounds like fuel starvation (although flames out the back at 8k might not support that). It is possible that the vent on the fuel tank is blocked and the pump is pulling a vacuum and then starving the carbs (assuming pump is OK and the filter isnt blocked).

The vacuum clears in time allowing the pump to resupply the carbs but the pump cant keep up as the fuel is starved again. Will the bike stall if you run it stationary for the same time as it takes to stall on the road?

If so - try running stationary with the fuel cap just open and see if it stalls then. If it doenst then the cap is the problem. If not that then I am a bit stumped without any more info

i have just had her running outside stationary for 20 mins no stall or cut out, i will try to go for a ride but know whats going to hapen,
pulled fuse on pump relay and it cut instantly so i presume pumps ok??

yep did the same in the same place even tried to blow out on full revs but cut out when i de throttled and felt like a hot wind on my left thigh from the motor???

tried it with the fuel cap open still the bloody same.
tried swapping the plugs and now it wont start
ordered some new plugs to see if thats part of the problem,
isolate 1 at a time i suppose.(*_*)

air filter clogged ?

when i was arsing about trying to make a functioning airbox/filter arrangement for my 4/6 it would do exactly this every time i went up this one hill on my "test route" .... ripped the air filter (well, bit of foam) out at the side of the road and it didnt do it again ...

it had been running so rich that under prolonged load it just loaded up with fuel and died.. was fine round town, or idling.

just a thought

its a newish filter but i will give it a try no harm seeing as it will be off again anyway cheers mate

Right sorted this out,
STEP 1 If you have any problems similar to this buy new plugs even if the plugs you put in are recent so as to eliminate

step 2 clean all your carb and fit new rubbers under the float needle so it wont pee petrol after you have had the carb on and off more times than i see the wife moan in bed, ( about the smelly bottom)
step 3 then make sure your battery is fully charged

and if it dont work after that ask a mechanic

that will see off 80 % of starting and running problems
