anyone got any tips on a diy job? want a damn good finish. robB how did you prep yours?

I didnt, just whacked primer over the top.

But my best understanding is that the prep is all important, get all the crap off the plastics, stickers, dirt, dead flies the lot.

Rub every last bit of paint to a matt finish with wet and dry, apply thin layers of primer, rub down any runs with wet n dry, apply more primer and rub down.

then go for your desired finish, again applying a thin layer, let it dry, and same again. so your building the layers up. If you get any runs use wet and dry to rub down untill smooth. And so on.

Then apply laquer. Weather you apply that in the same fashion im not 100%.

But i think thats it, very basically put.

just started to do mine by aerosol, looking quite good, ive choose matt paint though as its a lot easier to get a good finish, bottom half illuminus orange,top half black, both matt, rubbed them all down,filled what needed filling,rubbed down again,couple of light coats of primer,rub down then top coat if it needs it very ligh rubdown, stcickers,then laquer, u need somewhere nice and dry and warm with no damp!!

i did my mountain bike a year or so ago, was powder coated yellow but battered to f***, so its now a sexy matt black - used this guide - came out pretty well

lol definatly not, the paint will bloom(become patchy) and most probably start to flake off after a short amount of time

tbh i think i'll just do the lot in grey primer, give it that bad ass look.

Its a piece of piss baz. I repsrayed a seat unit on my old rs125. Bit of sanding, few cans of primer, sand that down, then just slowly build up the layers of paint and sand them down. Will take some time for drying etc.

another good tipis to put the aerosol on a bowl of hot water for a few mins before you use it, it gives it more pressure

I'm doing my race bikes at the moment. Wet and dry is good but for rubbing down to remove shine on origional plastics and for doing a final rub down before final coat i use scotch brite. I do still use wet and dry for flatting but on the lumps and bumps on the fairings there is less chance of you rubbing through the coated edges with scotch brite.

Aerosols are plenty good enough for a decent finish. Flat/Solid colours dont normally have a laquer and i wont be using one on my bike. Far easier to touch up the paint if it doesn't have one. Just polish it up with a rubbing compound and apply lots of coats of wax.
