Any one know the score on buying a bike with no tax. When you collect and ridie it home are you being illegal?
If you have ins cert, v5 and MOT caould you go straight to the post office and do it? But what if its too late and the post office is closed? hmmm i wonder

AFAIK, the ONLY circumstances under which you can ride an untaxed vehicle on the road is if you are taking it to a pre-booked MOT, or you are riding with trade plates fitted.

So the short answer is, if you buy a new bike and ride it anywhere without taxing it - you are being illegal. :smt018

surely to the post office must be in the same league as to an MOT station?

why would it be? you can walk to a post office to get the vehicle taxed, but getting a vehicle to/from an MOT test centre is a little more difficult if you cant drive it.
At the end of the day - you make your own choices. If you want to stick to the letter of the law, you cannot ride it on a public road until it has a tax disc on it.
you asked what the law was :smt004

Ive done it myself, ridden to the post office to get tax on an untaxed bike, doesnt make it right tho.

As caz said, if you want to stick to the law then walk, anything else is a risk :smt001

I think (much as we like to hate them) that you'd be hard-pressed to find a Copper who would pull you on your way to get road tax who wouldn't let you off.

The best thing to do is to have all your docs together with the exact money so if you do get pulled you can show them, and offer them to follow you to the nearest PO to do so.

The chances of that happening used to be very slim, but with ANPR recognition thingamy-bobs in most traffic cars, I guess it's a possibility...

like said its very unlikely that you'll get pulled for it. If i hadent have pulled a masive wheelie on a off road bike covered in mud (looked like id robed it) im 100% sure that the copper would have let me off. As it was i was being a twat so got what i deserved.

Or you could always do your tax online and have it posted to you

always do mine online, at least if you do get stopped you can prove you've paid for it, f*ck knows why nowadays we still have to show a tax disc.

Can't do it online when buying as none of your details will apply. For instance the checking of insurance. If you've only just taken the insurance out, its quite likely not in the dvla database, therefore you can't do it online. I'll just have to make sure i pick it up during the daytime and walk to the nearest post office.

insurance is on the MID database what SHOULD be updated the instant your policy is set to start.

good use of the word should!! Anyways, i have to go and exchange the V% and everything so might as well just pop to the nearest post office near them. Make a change to use the ol' legs for once!! :smt005
