sump types?

sump types?
My new engine i've got doesn't have any spaces for an oil cooler to be bolted on... is this a standard zxr thing or a thing racers do or what type of zxr's have them? I was thinking maybe it's a sump off a zx4 or a different kawasaki model.
what do you think?

some didnt come with an oil cooler, just had a bigger radiator instead.

Are you sure?
I'd have thought unless it's an air cooled bike it's got to have an oil radiator somewhere?
As far as I remember the sump on all the L models is the same, but the H was slightly different.

i aint checked my new L yet, but on my H, the oil cooler bolts to the underside of the rad..if that helps

H and L models have different oil coolers.

Never heard that. both H and L have oil coolers. Oil has to be kept within a certain temperature to work efficiently, so that's not to say ZXR400 sold in Siberia will have oil coolers as they would probably be pointless

That's a mighty generalization
It surely depends how efficient the engine is. In fact, I'd have thought air cooled engines are more likely to require an oil cooler to keep the oil temperature within it's operating range as it will lack the efficiency of water cooling

all zxr400s had an oil cooler, if anyone wants to prove me wrong go ahead, i have the facts in black and white and there were no variations for imports.
In answer to Dans question it may well be a one off sump or like you say off another kwak, post up a pic please this is interesting.

I believe VFR/RVF 400's don't have oil coolers. they have two water radiators instead.
Our GPZ500 only has a water radiator.

I think the oil in a V4 may run much cooler, because the VFR750's have a tiny oil cooler above the rad that's about an inch tall. Actually even the water radiator was about half the size of a ZXR400, too!

But if you tuned a VFR750 to give the same bhp/cc as a ZXR (ie about 115-120bhp) then I expect you'd need more cooling.

I'm not too sure about the effects of tuning on cooling, but I should imagine that depends what type of tuning you do?
So a rebore shouldn't really need better cooling, but something that raises the revs will?

not really,
you aren't going to make some fantastic increase in the efficiency of the combustion process*, so all you are really doing with almost all forms of tuning is chucking more fuel in to get more power out. With that you will have a proportionate amount of extra heat coming out.
it's a simplification, but it is true to say that a VFR750 is not in anything like as high a state of tune as a ZXR4.
*of the top of my head it's about 30% max for the otto cycle, so for every extra 1kW of power you get out, you'll be chucking out an extra 2kW of heat. Mmm toasty.
