how long does it take to warm up?, mine takes a while, if i try just a little bit of rev it doesnt like it until its warmed

ditto. start it on the choke, by the time I've got my lid on and sat on the bike it's fine to knock the choke off and ride away (obv not revving the hell out of it straight away)

Popular consensus when I last broached this subject, was that 90s bikes onwards don't require much warming up before they're ready to run.

As soon as it idles, it's ready to go.

Personally, I ALWAYS warm my bikes up before I go anywhere. Ok, so that's probably after having it drilled into me with 2-strokes, but it's not going to do any harm!

That said, most manuals seem to say that having the choke on for longer than 30-60 secs could cause damage to the barrel, which I can see the reasons for.

I also try not to use the choke if possible, and just hold the throttle on a bit. I've found that if you do this and hold the revs at around 2,000rpm, after a few seconds the revs will rise, so you lower the revs back to 2,000 and do it again.

BUT I think I once read in a Honda handbook to rev the engine lightly to warm it up, rather than to hold at constant revs. Thsi is for pretty much the same reasons as running a new engine in, or after a rebuild, where constant revs are A Bad Thing and much worse than high revs.

So now I'm just -ing confused and do a mixture of both.

I find the 100 mph thrash up my road gets it warm in no time

when i was using my 400 everyday id start it while i got my lid on then just ride off. If i was leaving my Mrs house then id roll it down the kerb start it while rolling then ride off.

2pokes i always leave for a few mins to properly warm up, and my 750 gets the time i takes me to get all my gear on

i used to warm my 125 up for about 10mins.

the 7r, give it choke for about 30secs, then drop droke down a bit for few more secs, then off with choke and hold throttle for a bit,

by the time ive got lid and gloves on i ride off,

but dont kill it for at least 5-10mins of gentle riding

always start my bike, put my lid and gloves on and then ride off. I never rev it more than about 4k until i can see the temperature is up though.

a good point to make about warming up...alot of poeple will keep the rev's as low as possible (ie below 3,000 rpm). At tho kids of speeds your putting the bottom end, gearbox ect under masive strain, its far better to keep the bike in higher RPM with its reving alot more freely

mines the same but if i try to rev it a bit itl bog until its warmed up (about 3-4 minutes), although i think it hasnt been used for a few months could this be the problem?

Anyone elses ZXR a real bitch to get started when cold?

Mine sounds like a bag of spanners and idles around 500 rpm and then conks out unless i keep an eye on it.

mine starts no bother hot or cold, choke or no choke.

Yeah, can't beat a 100mph warmup! The wheel spin tends to warm the tyres nicely too.

No, mine sometimes takes a few cranks t get going but once it's runnin git's fine.
My choke is all or nothing though - either sits at a gentle 1200 or screams at 4000+ Think my choke cable needs oiling...

Nah mate, its the same with all of them, they have a stupidly high revving choke. Ah well, wakes the neighbours up nicely in the mornings
