Adjusting carbs

Post by bikenut »

How many adjustments are there on a standard ZXR 400 L5 carb?

I have adjusted the pilot screw for 2 1/4 turns as per the manual but the bike still dies if you open the throttle too quickly.

Are they any other adjustments?, pretty sure the carbs are totally standard.

Carbs have been stripped, cleaned, checked and it still cant get them to work properly, i have not seperated them so the balance should be fairly close.

Cheers.

wow 2 1/4 turns i thoguht it'd be 1 1/4 as the service manual says for zxrs. thats a bit rich i think, make sure its warm tho, coz it always dies opening the throttle to quick on a cold engine. erm, check choke is off but working. theres not a great deal of stuff on the carb, unless u wan2 getcomplicated about jetting n stuff. can u give any more information?

I have the service manual here, it says pilot jet 2 1/4 turns out, is that too much?

See my other thread on starting after 18 months.

In a nutshell, bike was left for 18 months, have cleaned the carbs and they are spotless, starts fine.

Choke is fine, cables are fine.

If you open the throttle when warm slowly it revs right up, if you open it suddenly it dies instantly.

Also if you rev it it drops to about 3k then takes ages dropping the last bit back to idle.

trial and eror then, wot year is ur bike mines l3 n it says 1 1/2 turns, im using 1 3/4 coz of the bore. most vehicles use 1 1/4 standard. try leaning it slightly. check ur throttle cables and idle speed, helped with mine when mine wouldn't return to idle, its really trial and error of a good combination of fuel screw settings and idle speed, neddles and etc. which i wont go into. let us know ifu still ahve problems

yer its far to rich any thing from 1 1/4 to 2 is about normal depending on the mods just turn em quarter turns at a time and take it for a run its a pain in the ass but money is better in your pocket or ya tank than someone elses

Have re-adjusted to about 1 3/4 turns and its running a lot better.

Have not taken it for a run yet, have a few more jobs to do yet to get it back on the road.

Thanks for the help guys. :smt002
