I have a few questions for all you ZXR riders out there.

I am 20 but 21 in a couple of weeks. Me and my 2 best mates are getting bikes when we turn 21, I have been looking at a getting a ZXR400 and wanted to know what you think. I have never owned a bike and will be sitttin my test probably at the start of june.

Basically do you think a ZXR400 is a good first bike? What do i have to look out for when buying one? Do they need alot of work done on them if rinding alot, i will only be rinding in the summer? etc.

They are great first bikes if youve ridden a smaller one, but i guess theres no reason you cant jump straight on and just take it easy. You'll get alot more out of it if youve ridden before basically What bikes are you mates thinking going for?

I got my ZXR as my first bike when i was 21 - great little bike. just take it easy

i went from an NSR125 to a zxr400 not quite my first bike but still ideal for newbies methinks!

Let's see what i can do for you.

65 PS , 159 kilos (188kg ready 2 go), a 160 rear tire and a seat height of 790 mm.

these are the specifications that are important for you as a beginner. why? i'll tell you. as the first bike you should take one that is not too heavy and that has a relative low centroid. The ZXR is like that, and it is really light. it has nearly the same weight as all modern 600cc supersport bikes.

the (relative) small 160 rear tire is easy to handle and allows you to easily drive curves and take down the machine. a 180 or 190 would need more pressure.

if you are very tall, it is possible that you might feel uncomfortable with the position of the handlebars and footpegs. for tall drivers, there exist better bikes. but have a try, sit down on one and watch.

long tours can make your wrists hurt especially when you drive downhill!


now.. i think the zxr is one of the best bikes you could take as the first one.

and don't worry about flipping it over if you give it too much throttle cos they're near on impossible to wheelie unless your sonny ferguson

i think the zxr is only to wheelie with the clutch. never tried but some say so.

i passed in feb an my first bike was the ZXR an i aint took it easy lol i think you will love it to be fair each time you give it some you will have a big grin
with the ZXR not only is it more forgiving than a 6er but it will prepare you for the next step up, i must admit if i started on a 600 i would probly be dead by now with the amout of near misses iv had but the ZX will let you throw it out the way so its brill GET ONE!!!!!

The zxr is my first bike and i couldnt think of a better starter. Plus if you need any help theres always people on this forum that know what they are talking about.
The zxr riders are a sociable bunch you know lol (unless your a car in a bike space it seems! haha )

Thanks for all the replies guys, is been really helpful and made me want one even more now. Turn 21 on the 16th and hopefully be passing my test in June. Just need to get all the gear and a bike, lol.
