Tyre Size

I was wondering what the biggest (widest) possible tyre size is that can be fitted to a standard ZXR400 L rear wheel. I know that they have a 160 as standard.

Can one go bigger without the tyre rubbing on anything, and will it fit the standard rim? :smt017

I think you can for a 170 without the tyre rubbing, but why go to a larger rear tyre?

didnt this come up a few weeks back?

every tyre is designed to go on a certain sized rim. I guess you shouldnt have any problems getting a 170 on and a 180 will probably fit if you reduce the aspect ratio accordingly.
However, why on earth you would want to do this I dont understand. you'll just make the bike turn in slower - but if you want to ride in straight lines go for it :smt016

Wouldn't a slightly wider tyre have more surface area to create better grip during cornering? If so, wouldn't the extra grip be worth the slightly slower turn-in speed? :smt017

yes, you will increase the contact patch, but you dont need to do this on a ZXR. You have bikes putting out almost 3 times the ZXRs power and they are only running a 180 rear

and if the standard tyre size has enough grip to start decking out bits of the bike (pegs, exhaust, etc) then is there any point increasing it as you can't lean any further anyway, and hence can't go faster.

Thanks all for the insightful feedback. So, I suppose, the only reason left to increase the size of the tyre would be that the bike would look like a bigger bike i.e. ZX6R. :smt012

Well, the manual says that a 160 tyre is standard at the rear, and 120 in the front.
