ZXR 750 Brake Upgrade

Post by moppy »

First of all, hello everyone, new to the forum, just bought myself a ZXR 750 J2, and thought I should get involved with the community.

Here are some pics.

On riding it home, I found that the fork seals were leaking. They've since been done. And since I've just come from a ZZR with Nissin calipers, I was shocked by how lethal these brakes were.

Took em off, had a look and atleast 3 or 4 dust seals were sticking out of the caliper body. There looks to be generations of accumulated rubbish in the pistons and they're gonna need a good refurb with all new seals if they're gonna be any use again.

At which point, I started thinking about going for Nissins again. A full seal kit costs about £50 and decent calipers maybe 20-30 quid more? I've had a search through the forum and found this thread, which has been the most useful one so far.

I realise that the calipers with the bleed nipple sticking straight forward may not fit since the bleed nipple hits the mudguard mounting bolt. But the Nissin 4 pots with the offset bleed nipple (like this) might fit.

Now, I was worried about whther the calipers would have enough room there with the USD forks, but the above picture seems to confirm that it would. And this other picture also seems to suggest the same thing.

BUT, both those are from another ZXR model. My ZXR 750 fork legs look like this. The mudguard mounting bit is a fair bit thicker and I'm not entirely sure if the Nissins would still work or not.

So, some questions for some of you that may have faffed around with this already.
- Does anybody know if the ZXR 750 J can take the 4 pot Nissins? Specifically the Nissins with the offset bleed nipple that points "out" a bit rather than forward.

- Apart from having to machine away some of the insides of the Nissins and having to use shouldered bolts, are any other modifications needed to make the Nissins work on the 750/ZXRs with the USD forks?

- Are the OEM Tokicos actually any good? I had nothing but trouble trying to bleed them and get them to work properly on my ZZR, but they were probably a bit shot when I got them. I now have the chance of buying some refurbed Tokicos which would obviously get rid of any mounting issues and gives me a good clean starting point. I'm happy to keep on top of maintenance, but I do ride all year round. My questions is, when well maintained, are they actually up to the job?

- Are the later Tokicos off the GSXR 600/750 K1-K3 any good? Any experience with these? I reckon these should probably bolt on fine with some shouldered bolts...

- Finally, does anyone have any experience with the Z1000 Nissins? 63mm mounting hole distance, bleed nipple points out, but it looks like there might be a little too much caliper in front the of the forward mounting hole which would hit the mudguard mount areas on the forks.

I realise this topic has probably been done to death, but there's not too much info for the 750 and I'm trying to get all the info together in one place. I guess most of the questions can only answered by trying out, but just hoping that between everybody, the questions maybe can be answered.

Cheers
