whining/grinding noise @ 8-9k rpm

Post by ross46 »

As the title says I have a whining/grinding noise @ 8-9k rpm, this happens under load, in neutral and with clutched pulled in. If im riding I'll hear it as I go past 8k until 9k and then if if I roll off the throttle I hear it as it goes into that range. Anyone had anything similar or got any ideas? Ross

Any chance you can get a video up? Where is it roughly coming from?

I can try but its quite difficult as when I have it in neutral and rev it the exhaust makes it difficult to pinpoint

without a video it could be a number of things, but if its only happening in a small range of RPM's i would think its some kind of harmonic/resonance and probably nothing to worry about...the airbox on mine does 'scream' at me in a similar place in the rev range...could be that?

if this definitely a new thing, or has it gotten progressively worse?

Happened in the last couple of days, I was thinking resonance aswell as most other things e.g. Cam chain, clutch, valves, drive chain etc. wouldn't be in such a small rev range, I'll try to get a video soon as right now I might be having to go to the hospital due to some medication, thanks

Could be the cam chain tensioner. I recall someone having a similar problem some time ago, Cargo had a look at it for them and turned out a spline from the tensioner ratched had come off.

Just to update for other people I case they have similar problems, turns out it is the cam chain, the tensioner is at its limit so I need a new chain, 50ish for pattern but £32.12 for genuine! Only question now is how do I know if the guides need replacing? Do you replace as set or if not how do you know when to? Thanks

Its only £40 or so for both tensioners so could be worth changing the pair for peace of mind?

Not sure how you tell weather they need changine, manual doesnt seem to specify as far as i can see.
