Barrel Removal?

Post by -marktspud- »

quick question or 2- might be a long answer though :smt004

can the barrels be removed from my damaged engine block (L9) and re-inserted into replacement block?

if so how is it done?

Yup , you need to go to a machine shop and have them pressed out then you can swap them about.

Mark the bottom flanges 1~4 to make sure they are put back in in same order and mind do that with your pistons too.

Are the barrels sealed to the block using a sealant/loctite?

They are an inteferance fit hence they need to pressed in & out no goo required and you can't do yourself unless your the man of steel :smt002

On that note,

Some Renault engines use O rings on the sleeves so while you have the head off and you move the crank with out clamping them down you can break the seal shocking

Shittin bricks while the head was away getting welded and skimmed - but the motor ran sweet once it came back and was all bolted up again.

Iv seen a process where they freeze the barrels, heat the block and are then slotted together. Respective expansion and contraction causes the two to be pretty damn tight.

Cool lads - thanks for the info

Have a 30T press and I am getting a suitably sized plate made up to push barrels out

Wont be doing this for a couple of weeks (waiting on replacement block to arrive) but Ill update as to my progress

Yeah Id imagine its an interference fit - I think ill freeze/heat the barrels/block respectively and give it a go :smt004
