Hey Guys, just bought another zxr and just stripping down I noticed the carb needles are a red colour! Now does anyone know what this means as all my other bikes have silver needles?

aftermarket or discoloured ?

whats the markings on 'em ?

my dyno jet needles were red in colour and alot thinner than standard and also adjustable

Did you have to get the bike set up on a dyno extonyg? And did you have any trouble running the engine as it seems to cut the engine if I open the throttle?

I don't think they are discoloured more like aftermarket I guess zimm

hard to tell from the pics but ye they looked like that.ye i had it dyno'd with them in because i was having bad running problems down low, (they were fitted before i brought it) above 8k they were great down low it just run way to rich (if you search im pretty sure the pic of the dyno print out is on here.)tried all sorts to make it better, different emulsion tubes and jets but in he end changed the needles for different aftermarket ones and it was loads better.i think they were more for a race bike as mine is a road bike. i sold them to someone on here cant remember who though.

Yeah its not running right, it kinda idles but then you open the throttle up and it just cuts outs! Would this be an over fuelling problem? How can I get it running right with these carbs on will I need to send it to someone like RMKD?

try some stock needles in it ..

what model is it ?

ok mine wasnt that bad was still rideable, maybe there is another problem with the carbs apart from the needles? try adjusting the needle clip to its highest point so the needle is at its longest.thats assuming they are adjustable.have you had the carbs apart and cleaned them up yet?

Its an L4 I think, I put one set of normal carbs on it and then realised the pipe where the coolant goes on the left hand side was snapped so thank god I have many spares and put on another set and after a few goes it turned over and idled and revved pretty cleanly.

Orite well doesn't really sound good then as I was going to put them on my race bike, I haven't actually needed to take apart any carbs yet so I don't really know what to do, had a look through the manual and microfiles looks a little complicated lol

I have some stock L4 import needles here if you want them to try in it.. but it does sound like there's maybe other issues

Thanks for the offer Zimm but got a couple spare at home which I can swap but prob wont venture into that for a while. Also Zimm am I right in saying that you are able to get hold of Generator covers??

I kinda know that the camchain tensioner is gone as it is rattling quite a bit but also it might be some thing else like valve clearances if I could post a video up will people be able to tell the difference or would it be a case of fix one if its still there try the other problem?

yep, I can supply genny covers, I have them vapour blasted, tig welded and reinforced.. finish is bare ally, paint or powdercoat .. your choice.. Can do them outright for £50, £35 exchange if your old one can be repaired.

a loose cam chain is more of a rattle from the side just as the revs start to drop from being blipped in neutral.. valve clearances is more of a syncopated rythmical tapping from the topend.. if it sounds like valve clearances but is louder, more consistent, and audible at all revs, it'll most likely be a worn cam follower.

stick a screwdriver handle to your ear and place the tip on various bits of the engine.. you'll locate the source of the tap quite quickly.
