Standard downers
AMS Race can
Standard leads
Standard jets #95
Standard airbox
Mine will start fine when hot, but when cold, its like crancking over a tractor.

I was talking to a friend of mine that used to race the and said that if the coils get to hot they have problems generating a strong enough spark to fire, might be worth trying to keep the coils cool somehow or maybe fitting some beefier items.
cheers

L6 model
30,000 miles
carb heaters fitted
NGK spark plugs
standard air filter
used to have full length Blue flam can, now has stubby blue flame can
NEVER had a problem starting, from cold or hot. hit the starter, give a few revs an it fires into life instantly
But with my mates L9 he has to hold the starter for at least 3 times longer than me
hes got standard air filter
race can
14,000 miles
dunno about plugs
Nope

My bike always runs hotter than the sun but I don't get any starting problems.
I'll update the specs once I've had the tank off - I've not looked at the carbs/air filter yet.

I think I have a solution to all your hot starting problems. My bro had the very same problem with his ZX6r G1. He had to bump the thing down hills to get it started which doesn't look pretty at all. He checked the plugs and they were brown which is an indication of over heating. So give it a go, change all your plugs to fresh new ones cause my bro did and he hasn't had any problems since.
All the best.
Richard.

Hmm...
L3 model
10,000 - 50,000
Don't think it had carb heaters. I'm sure I'd have noticed!
Standard plugs.
Standard filter.
Full Micron system.
Later 444cc rebore kit.
Always great at cold starting. Hot starting was fine until the head gasket had been blowing for a long time.
Still bad after the rebore after a really hard blast.
At the time I sold it, it was about ready for both new plugs and valves - so either or both are definite posibilties.
Also, the carbs needed balancing with lots of flatspots through the range which I compensated for with super unleaded and octane boosters.

Didn't used to get it, but started a while back.
When warm it would just spin over but do nothing, that was sorted with new plugs, but now it will turn over a couple of times then struggle as if the battery is dead

.

89 h1
standard air filter
new ngk plugs ( standard ones that the online manual says)
new fuel filter,
g force end can
standard pipes.
mine has hot starting problems.
admittedly when i first got the bike, it was runing at 6 screws out on the carbs, ive put them to 1.5 now.
i currently have cleaner in the fuel, which is making it run a little rich.
i have just p;ut a brand new battery on today, but problem still there. listening to it crank, i think its got to be the coils/ ht leads, as its firing all the way until that point.
gonna stick a new clutch on it this week, as the clutch is still gripping when lever in, i think the springs are gone and so are the plates.
hopefully that will cure that.
i am gonna put a uk cdi on mine ( does an l model uk cdi work on a h1, i hope so!)
mine currently has the restrictor acting in the jap cdi, so this needs sorting.
any one else tried the coils as this seems to be pretty effective

ok ok ok.
firstly i'm trying not to get too excited but, it may be a little hard.
listning to you guys, and the way the bike is.
i've come to the following conclusion.....
when the engine is hot, the battery is fine, as its turning the starter motor, which means the soleniod etc is good, so where does the problem stop....
its in the spark, so what causes the spark, the coils.
hese are trapped behind the frame below the air box, above the engine, and get bloody hot...
so why will it start fine cold.... cause these are cold......
so what i have done is get some pumbing pipe insulatio ( the grey tube things.)
chopped em up and completely surroundd both coils.
and the results.....
on the drive test ( run engine till fan comes on)
turn it off.
give it 5 seconds.
hit the start button.
......... dud dud wooom woom.
we have instant start!!!!!!
f*** me this is a first!!!!!
so now, th road test.
a little longer on the road may mean the coils get more heat too them.
we shall see
watch this space
!!!!!

Arent the tank tubes supposed to provide cooling round that area?
Sounds like a good idea to me tho, if thats the cause anyhow. Could develop that into a non fire starting idea im sure
