What the hell are you two talking about???
What's Formula SAE and IndmdniuHGBUHyhbkjbdv or whatever?
This sounds interesting!

insrance is no bigge i was paying £700 a year at 17 1 ncb in a okish area, what yes is expensive but considering i had to pay £1,600 to insure a Corsa SRi 1.4 (slow as snails piss).
At £700 a year the zxr was cheap, im now 19 3 years ncb paying around £500 a year for a zxr750, Maico GM star 250, Honda CRM250
I also have any bike insrance. try here for insrance
http://www.elephant.co.uk/otherProducts ... ance.phtml i also just got a quote for a zx10r for £480 a year tpo :S

I've found that a great help with insurance is to go to
http://www.visordown.com and click the 'insurance' tab.
There's a big list with websites, and about 5 sponsored ones at the top.
Go down the whole list and eventually you'll find a quote you're happy with!
It would be good to have a similar resource on this site, actually, Baz?

main reason for running an il4 is due to lack of other suitable lumps. 600cc bike engines are easy to get hold of, light and relatively cheap. As you pointed out, the inline 4 does breathe better than a twin/single with the restrictor inplace.
I would have loved to see Western Washington uni's V8!
one of my mates was on this years bath team and is a bit of a v twin obsessive. i believe* they did the design of the car based around a sleeved down, forced induction sv650 motor. think they got a bit of a kicking by the judges at last years competition because (apparently) they don't like forced induction. unlikely they would have been able to get the power from a naturally aspirated twin, so in the end I think the rest of the team chickened it and they actually built the car around an r6 lump.
my mate originally wanted one of the aprilia sxv550 motors, but didn't think they could quite afford that!
(*i reserve the right to have got some of the details wrong, being as i found out most of it in various pubs some time ago.)
you an (ex) engineering student Caz?

SAE - Society of Automotive Engineers
IMechE - Institute of Mechanical Engineers
FStudent / Formula SAE
Fstudent is the UK equivalent of FSAE (which has been running since the 1970s)
I can talk about this all day, but essentially it is a competition for Students to design /manufacture and compete with a single seater open wheeled race car
Apologies if the rules have changed - I havent read them in about 4 years! (jeeze im starting to feel old!)
max engine capacity 610cc, must run a SINGLE 20mm restrictor in the air intake (providing you are running petrol), must have a minimum suspension travel of 2" in each direction (ie you cant just design a go kart)
competition is judged on a variety of different events, some static and some dynamic
cost
design
marketing ?
acceleration
skid pan
autocross
endurance / fuel economy
cars typically weigh IRO 200-250kg, use a 600cc bike engine (CBR / R6 seem to be most popular) and you get to see all sorts of weird and wonderful things - launch control , pneumatic gear shift shift, integrated uprights and calipers, turbochargers.
great thing is - all the cars look different, the events are such slow speed that aerodynamics do not usually come into it (although does anyone remember cal polys HUUUUGE wing?)
generally limited funding from the uni, so rely heavily on what you can beg in return to sponsorship.
some unis you can do it as part of your course and get credit for it. others, like the one i went to, it is all done in your spare time and doesnt count towards your degree.

Yup - much like that

but in a definite list rather than a discussion. I was quite amazed this year by how many companies do online quotes now! i.e. almost all of them!

i will combine them into a more definite list if not just for you mate.

can probably find out on that one if you want

One of the guys I went to uni with has landed himself as one of the judges.
R6 lump seems to be a popular one this year - nice n compact unit

yep - did Mechanical Engineering at Birmingham uni. Finished a few years ago now

yeah, mech eng at bath, finished in summer 05.
never actually did FS, but knew quite a few people that did in various years.
now design gearboxes for a living.

cool, I finished summer 03.
Smart move not doing FStudent - seriously compromised the rest of my final year. I made the mistake of linking my final year project to it - never did manage to get any meaningful data. Although you get credit for it at bath uni?

nice one. I dont get involved in design, was never any good at it. My job title is Product Engineer; I do tailoring work on large diesel engines; 38 - 78litres, which quite probably gives away who I work for
