its an odd one, the starter motor turns, but i fair mashed some of the carbon brushes trying to get the commuter bit in, the solenoid, when i depress the starter buton makes a loud click, then makes another click when i release the button. have ordered replacement starter motor. the starter motor turns over, i removed the generator cover to look at it, but it soesnt sound like its turning the motor over, just makes a kind of grinding sound.

fuel pump is working and the rest of the electrics are ok, the 30A fuse in the starter relay is fine and there are no fuses blown in the junction box...
You have tried charging the battery, haven't you?

If it's showing less than 12v it's probably buggered. I've had them do exactly what you describe when they're shagged. (not literally! I'm no pervert!)

battery is less than 2 months old and is fine, bike was not really charging and had a hot start problem so thats why i decided to start looking at everything.

i only touched the starter motor so unless when i fitted that i have messed up something else im pretty sure it should only be a problem with that, and i had a massive problem getting the carbon brushes back into position, scored at least one of them and i flattened/mashed a few of the copper wires that go from the brushes to the plate that holds them in place...so i think its working, but i dont think its spinning fast enough...gonna check today to see if i am still getting a spark, if i am then it is making sparks and pumping fuel fine, the starter motor gear is in place properly so i would have to guess that its a problem with the speed of the motor, it doesnt make a sound like its trying to crank the motor over, just sounds odd, might take a vid.

Hot start problems I got boiled down to the reg rec being shagged, I haven't got a problem with hot starts since replacing mine!

its not sparking either...so might have shorted something else whilst i was messing about? have got starter motor, fuel relay and starter solenoid on order, if not the only other thing i can see it would be is the IC ignitor or the junction box...as there is noting else there except switches which are working, and wires...

the other odd thing is that i cant see the piston moving up and down, but the gears hat the startor motor connect to do move (took off generator cover), surely i should see the piston moving?
