Didn't realise they were mounted differently on the H model. Apologies for disputing that part.

Anyway, the answer to that is just strength at the mounting point.

I'm not about to trash a coil to prove it, but I guarantee if you cut through one between the mounting point and the main body of the coil, you would find nothing but plastic.

Anyone got a blown coil kicking around.

The bike would not run if they were earthed. The mounts are metal, but the if you break the mount tabs to the coil, there are no conenctors to the plastic, to the metal surrounds in the coils.

Please look at the workshop manual wiring diagram, this will clearly show they are not earthed. They have a live feed and a ECU igniter feed, if they were earthed your bike would not spark. Well your frame might

okok, lol, i was wrong, and you were right

Ok, having looked at my coils last night, there was a lot more metal in the mounts than I thought.

However I did verify again that the bike runs fine without them connected to anything (it runs even better with new plugs and HT leads, which is why I had it apart).

basically ive cut a coil openand the metal goes righ inside the coil,

That bar does nothing for grounding afaik. To me its exactly as you would find in the middle of a transformer, and iirc they are there to increase the strength of mutual induction between the primary and secondary coils by keeping the magnetic field closer to them. Grounded to the frame or not, i dont think it makes any difference.

ok guys sorry to start the big debate i cleaned them up any way and it didnt make any odds ive tested the coils on tick over and there kicking out about 3.90 volts thats on tick over and they went higher the more you rev the bike . ive had the carbs in bits over this weekend and clened them up again there was a lot of red residue in the float bowls to say its only done 80 miles since they where last done i was a lot braver this time removing all the jets and the small filters in each carb .And I put some instant gasket on the inlets not had chance to try it yet tho i might go as far as draining the fuel out and blasting the tank out with comperssed air not sure if it will make much driffrence tho its been filled twice

red residue? Rusty tank?

it'll be a combination of rust and stale petrol goop in the bottom of the tank. Need to give it a proper clean out as far as you can.
