As above, just write back and say that you are the registered keeper of the bike, it is declared SORN and it is kept in a lockup at such and such address. You do not have constant access to the lockup but the only keys to the bike are kept on your person. To your knowledge the bike was in the lockup at the time and date in question. Say you are happy to cooperate with any further enquiries.

Try to remember where you were at the time, you may need someone to confirm your whereabouts. If it wasn't tearing around on the bike you'll be ok!

think about this,

1... Sorry to say but do you think your mate could have taken it out for a spin, even thoe you have 2 keys its worth thinking about and 2 INNOCENT until found guilty, they have to prove you are guilty, ring them and tell them it wasnt you, they will have to do the leg work to prove it was you,

If they have a photo it should be easy to prove that it wasn't your bike.
You'd need to be very unlucky if the bike is the same as yours.

However

I'd be concerned that maybe your mate has been for a little spin...............?

Best thing is to cooperate with the cops don't go trying to give them a hard time be honest and try to remember what you were doing at the time and more importantly who you were with.

First things first, you are innocent until proven guilty.

Now if I was you, the moment I opened this letter I'd have been onto the local police station. And if they're not any help, citizens advice. If you are telling the truth than you have nothing to worry about. Try to think back to the date, were you at work? Were you out with mates? At home with a family member? Anything. Even if you were shopping, get down and see if you can get a cctv recording proving you were there and not on the bike.

Does it say on the SORN what mileage the bike was at when declared? Whats on the speedo? Tell them what you know and leave it at that, if they want to try and take it further with you then time to get a lawyer i guess. But yes, let them do the running.

And don't let everyone on here terrify you, either - it could be something as simple as trying to ELIMINATE you from an enquiry.

I'm sure all the stuff about failure to comply etc is just standard on such letters. Personally, I still think it should be made clear exactly why they want these details, what you're being accused of, and think a personal visit would have been far better suited...

It's really not worth stressing over because you don't know what's going on yet.

They could of just got the reg wrong and you have the letter by mistake.

I had a similar thing come through the post a while back. It said I owed money for an unpaid parking ticket in Mayfair on a very snowy day when I was at work. Threatened court action and the such if I didnt pay up immediately.

I wrote them a very nice letter back asking for exact details of the vehicle that was y parked in Mayfair as the vehicle I own is a colour, make, model and was firmly tucked up in the garage at that time. Not to mention the fact that I was at work!!! I got a letter from work confirming that I was there all day and sent it in with the letter.
I got a reply back saying "the parking attendant made a mistake!"

I assume that you are the only one with access to your bike gear / helmet?

What I would do is write a letter back along these lines

I write in response to your letter dated XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX regarding the rider of my motorbike <insert reg here>. The motorcycle was SORN'd on DD/MM/YY and is currently locked away in secure storage and as such I have not ridden the vehicle. I have not given my permission to any third party to ride the vehicle, so if my motorcycle has been sighted on the road it has been ridden without my permission. My motorcyle is <<insert colours here>> and a description of my bike gear and helmet is as follows:
Could you please provide me with further information of the description of the rider and the motorcycle sighted on the above date?

ok mate, i have dealings with the law from time to time, so i will explain.
your vehicle reistration mark has been used in the committing of an offence, for example speeding or failing to stop for police. something like that. As the registered owner of the vehicle, you have been sen a notice of intended prosecution, ( or an NIP) for short.
My suggestion to you s compose a statement explaining where the vehicle is kept. who has access to the vehicle, ask for idenitifaction of rider and bike ( eg if a speed camera ask for the photo's taken) then comfirm your apparel andwhat your bike looks like. I suggest you also do the same with your mate, where the vehicle i kept at.if it goes any further, get a solicitor
