Also, its possible thats an aftermarket system and its kissing the frame causing heat transfer.

Oh yeah, IS THERE ANY OIL IN YOUR BIKE?! :smt009

What he said ^

yeah there is oil in it, its due for a change so i bought some couple of days ago. I thought it was empty but my friend said it looked empty coz i checked it while it was hot and the oil will still be runnign round the engine. Oil comes up half way up the window if stood upright.

my friends bike with this plastic bit

but mine doesnt seem to have it underneath the fairing

is that what you meant mate?

Oooh now thats interesting.

Mine's also an e-box (H model) and it don't got any plastic either.

I haven't noticed my leg getting hot, but the casings do get INSANELY warm compared to my other bikes.

Probably just normal mate.

If there was anything wrong with it, it wouldn't run proper. You'd know pretty quickly if it was overheating or anything ..

I am concerned about your temp gague never moving tho. Sounds like the last owner wired the fan in directly to the switch because the wires were all corroded or the thermostat is spooged. Likely the latter.

You want to turn the fan on if you are idling on the bike for any amount of time or stuck in traffic during a long run or on a hot day.

temp gauge woe is probably just the thermistor in the thermostat housing, is duff. Happens all the time with them on aprilia.

you cant see the oil till you lift the bike is level as the oil drains out of the clutch case.

the bike runs fine and is lovely to ride. The heat has just made me worry a bit ( helps your leg keep warm though lol ) as for the temp gauge, i better have a look into that. The last owner said it was just for when sitting in traffic etc so i can turn the fan on before it starts to get hot to help with the cooling.

i dunno.

I just thought the engine started to sound a bit tappy and the oil might of been the reason. ( like tappets in a car engine when they got no oil. ) But when you stand it upright, it does have oil in there. The last owner did say it could do with a oil change as it stood over winter and might have condensation in there or something?

yeah if it's bin stood all winter and not had an oil change, you wont go wrong by doing that immediatly.

as for the heat, my 400 and 750 do it. Once the engines nice and warm and i start moving forwards theres just a nice warm draft through the right hand side, never had any problems with either bike so i would assume it's not a big deal. dont worry about it and enjoy your bike.

In fact my 7R does it, but its actually quite hot too! Really warms your legs up in hot weather!

yeah i think it might be a case of i dont have the plastic bit masterofinifinty was on about. My friend has it on hers so it might block the heat from her leg, plus she does have any of her fairing on at the moment so the heat will excape easier i suppose.

Oil change, is that something a person who knows nothing about bikes can do or not? How many litres do you put in them? I bought two litres the other day, is that enough?

I believe it's 3L or 3.25 with a filter change (which you should really do every time!)

I think your mate has just made you paranoid about your bike! :smt003

I don't know if those rubbers are there to stop engine heat getting back to you, or to keep the elements out of the engine, but they are best there if you've got them.

I was checking the fairing vents and stuff on my VFR750 a while back, and was interested to find that one of the main vents in the side fairing appears to be there solely to blow cool air onto my legs, rather than cooling the actual engine! Bit of a random fact there, but I don't think I ever thought too much about where the vents on my ZXR were actually trying to route the air...

jamz if you've found a hole in your fairing it means a cable tie has fell off :smt005

yeah, mine seems to warm my left leg more than the right. i always assumes if was just a combination of the exhaust and some quirk of the air flow through that side of the fairing.

wouldn't worry about that. would get your temp gauge working though so you can see what's actually happening
