Hi CaNsA,
I did thanks but just realised the message I sent back to you didn't send! I'm in L9 by the racecourse, Widnes is a bit of a way off - do you know the guys at Orrell Park Bikes at all?
Cheers

I know John and Matty @ orrel park motorcycles, it's not far from me.
They are very good blokes.
But for engine work the only blokes i trust are Pete and Nic at OTC in widnes, which aint that far.
I travel to Widnes every day, takes me about 15mins along the M57.
I think they have a van but will porb charge for collection.
Might be cheaper hiring a "Man with a van" for the one way journey.

Thanks for having a listen
all looks ok under rocker cover and noise started all of a sudden, didn't come on gradual

You need to look closely.................measure each clearance and check each rocker
Could be a shim has jumped out...........unlikely but possible
I would suggest that you do not start the engine again untill you find the problem and fix it

Hi Cargo,
will take rocker cover off again but whereabouts are the shims in relation to the springs and the top of the vavles? Do you have a picture at all?
Cheers

Each cam lobe bears down on a rocker arm the rocker arm acitvates the valve.
The shim sits in a reccess on top of the valve.
If you check the manual it will explain how to set the engine in such a position so that valve clearance can be measured...............when the engine is in that position the rocker arm on that valve can be moved to one side and the shim will be visible.
There are of course 16 valves to check..............with engine on the bench and the relevant covers off clearances can be checked and adjusted in a very few minutes
Rocker arms require only a visual inspection.............wear severe enough to produce noise will be very apparent

Hi,
Just checked alignment of cam markings with bottom pulley at 'T' next to 'H' and the inlet marking appears to be about 5mm higher than the casing so the mark on the inlet cam appears to be at Mark '4' on the attached drawing. The exhaust seems to be on the right line. Could this be the problem with the noise? If it is, how do I move that one cam round anti clockwise to line the mark up? Thanks for your help

It is extremely unlikely that that your camshafts have slipped a tooth and are causing the noise.
I suspect that you are just not lining the marks up correctly

No, but she did say her ex had buggered about with it so we don't know what he's done with it while he was fiddling about. The problem may now be worse than it was before he started
