It depends what you want it for?

If you want something to use ever day to get your knee down and be good on long journeys as well, and that NEVER breaks down, then get an early VFR750 (1990-96) with plenty left over to sort the suspension and stuff. Or get two!

If you want all of that but the power to go past a flat-out early Fireblade as if it's stood still, then get a ZX9R (any model but preferably C or later).

Fireblades would be slightly better on track, but then for £2500 you'll be stupid to pass up an R1, but it won't be as 'sensible' on the roads as a 9r or a VFR.

SRAD GSXR's are GSXR's. So it's fine if you want corrosion and grief. I've just never liked them...

at the mintue, im seriously looking at zx7r and zx9r's.

For the 7 it's just the rear shock and making sure the front calipers are in good working order.

For 9r's the B models are old and a bit heavy, but I found mine quite flickable still. C models have an alleged gearbox problem (see the My Other Bikes section on here - it seem to just be the C1's though) and the front discs are prone to warping and that's about it. E's and F's you might just get in that budget and there's not really anything specific to check.

They've done me proud, and I'm pretty sure my next bike will be a newer and lower mileage one.

(and the green ones are faster)

tbh never heard of any problems with the zx7r except as Jamz says the 6 pot calipers but thats just 6 pots in general not zx7rs. the zx9rs have always been pretty indestructiblt but a little less desirable

I totally agree on all counts!

ZX7R's are one of the most beautiful bikes ever made (as are the 400's). Out of the all 9r's the C's are the ugliest. They're still 'ok' though. And 6-pots can be an absolute arsebiscuit because they don't like any dirt at all in them and can be a nightmare to bleed! As I found out after my 1 hour caliper swap last week turned into an 8 hour slog and I'm still going to have to do more to them... :smt013
