There seems to be more and more members appearing that are racing the ZXR400 so i've created a special section just for you to show off results, discuss meets etc etc.

As quoted above- " It seems that a lot of these bikes suffer from weak spark- a spark may not be visible if a spark plug is inserted into one of the leads and earthed out! I’ve found that the best way to check, is with a timing light, just to see if it flashes. If it flashes then you can assume that the ignition side is working ok, but voltage may be low." and " You need to see if you’ve got voltage at the spark plugs. Check all four leads with the timing light, you don’t even have to remove the plugs, it’s that easy."

Have you sorted it out yet?

Tried the Timing Light with no joy mate! My mate who adapts my bikes still thinks that it could be the pickup....?

could be the pick up or the wires from it...........................I had one that was a nightmare to start from warm.
Turned out to be the wires from the pick up had broken down..............where they are inside the engine heat had made the insulation brittle

An easy check would be to see if you have power to the ignition coils, it would only take a few minutes to check. If you connect a voltmeter to each red wire in turn, to a good earth, you should have 12-14 volts. Don’t forget to turn the ignition on! I assume that all you have is a kill switch (no key switch) for on and off. If you’ve got power at the coils, then the problem is either CDI unit, which I think you’ve already changed or the ignition pick up coil,. There should also be a small resistor wired into the circuit, it’s normally built into the key switch, it’s an anti-theft- hot wire deterrent. It fools the system into thinking the key has been turned! It may take some finding but it’ll be there somewhere, I’ve seen some very poor connections here in the past! Just eliminate one thing at a time, easy things first!

Where are abouts is the ignition pickup coil thing? Had a scan about for it.

From what I know between me and 2 other people ive had look at it, the cdi has been changed twice by me so in theory it cant be that.

Had a mate check the igniton coils (all 4) and there is power, but he didnt check the voltage.

Just this morning his boss tested the pickup sensor (little black magnetic thing) and its operating at 430 ohm, I think its ohm.

As you can see my knowledge sucks, but im still trying!!

Where to look next?? :smt017
