Loud Exhaust!!!

Post by U_h0rnet5 »

Hey guys,

I was wondering what would happen if I got pulled over by the police with an extremely loud exhaust and what would the chances be as well?

most likely a rectification notice. Where you have to get it MOT'd. At this point it is at the MOT testers discretion, who will most likely pass it. Then keep te bit of paper he provides show it to old bill and then keep i ton you for if you get pulled again.
And that is pretty much the advice that MCN gave in the problems page a few weeks back.

This is the whole problem with exhausts. They are down to discretion and one person's idea of loud is completely different to someone else's
These things are sent to try us!!

They will KEEEEEEL you!!! Like a bull!!!

I've had some pretty -ing loud bikes, and never been pulled over for it. If I have been pulled over for anything else (especially blipping the throttle downshifting as I went past an unmarked car just as we passed through a tunnel... :smt010 ) - my end cans have never got a mention.

You watch me get pulled on my way home tonight, now! :smt003

What you do need to watch is getting pulled by the cops when the MoT guy is present. They sometimes have purges where they pull all bikes and check them for small plates, race exhausts etc. They have a MoT guy with them with all the gear to test the dB level of the exhaust, so it is not left to discretion. Plus, if it's marked 'Race Use Only' you're fecked. Had a purge some years ago in W Yorks. One kid got done for small plate, race exhaust, and non-road-legal small indicators. Chatting about it at Squires Cafe some weeks later he was spitting feathers. Got the rectification notice as mentioned, plus a fine, plus 3 points. Still affects his insurance today :smt010

I'm not sure if it's the same for bikes but my mate got pulled in his car, the copper took him to a quiet bit of town and pulled out a db meter. His came in right on the 90db limit (at 2/3rds of the rev range held for 10 seconds) and he was given a pink bit of paper saying it's fine. He was told that if it had failed he'd have had to take the vehicle to a police station within the week, pay £30 and get it retested to prove it had been changed.
Most people with properly loud supras etc seem to just take the £30 hit and stick a baffle in for the visit.

I really don't know if this applies to bikes, they seem to be overlooked alot more in terms of noise here. I think as long as you don't hoon it in built up areas, and save that for a/b roads you'll be fine :] I sometimes run a straight pipe if I'm starting work at 5am... People on my route must hate it but I love it. Come to think of it I wouldn't mind being woken up by a beautifully loud bike.

I was given a section 59 warning. I was tempted to try and get it over ruled as the officer made me sit on my bike while he removed the keys and left me sitting in the junction - no lights at 9 at night in the winter sitting in a junction waiting for an officer to check insurance/tax details ain't fun. However they're only on for a year so i couldn't be bothered and just left it on. Expired now.

P.S and he made me sign his form declaring I was in the wrong and riding in an unsociable fashion before he'd give my keys back. giraffe...
