Teasing me

Post by Tom mccrea »

The saga continues...

Got the bike to cough and splutter into life, briefly...plugs got a good rubbing. Then back in, took a while of turning over which combined with trying the last week or so has drained the battery and raised concerns over my battery charger being crap.

I think I may still have a carb problem although...

...Petrol is getting past the carbs and after continued attempts at turning over eventually a fine mist comes from the exhaust and almost always a backfire. Could this be carbs or plugs/ht leads or maybe the battery is fried?

Carbs would always benefit from a strip down and clean, float bowls, needles out, jets all cleaned up.

However if you are struggling to start it, get the plugs out and heat them up on a gas ring by using a pair of pliars to hold them as they will get so blindingly hot. Then bung em all back into the bike straight away when hot with a good battery, a little spray of easy start or the australian "Start ya giraffe". You should then be able to start the bike up fairly easy unless theres a more untoward problem.

I changed my 400's over years ago to the stick coil modification and have always found the zxrs to start much much better with the stick coils.

Thanks, plugs got another good cleaning, battery left on charge. Sound like an idiot but it may have been me just not starting it right after all. played with the choke and think (touch wood) i've got it.

Ive just spent a few hours rubbing in the garage rubbing down one of the panels and my fingers with 120 grit, onto the 400 grit tomorrow i think. Long bloody tedious job.

Ive no doubt the carbs do need cleaned out but thats on the list...May even leave it in somewhere to get setup then at leas i know its done right...just gotta find some ££££
