Hi Guys, back on the ZXR400!

There seems to be more and more members appearing that are racing the ZXR400 so i've created a special section just for you to show off results, discuss meets etc etc.

Hi Guys, back on the ZXR400!

Post by vodkalex »

Hi guys,
Back to the 400s after a 5 year gap!!! and after some advice on my track bike.

I have a H2 model with standard carbs and airbox, and was wondering what main jets I should use on them. Also have an RMKD bottom end Im about to put in as well, only done 500miles.

I basically looking for cheap mods to start the race scene, or any setup tips.

Are there any ignition advancers that fit?

Any help would be great!

Alex.

first things;
- probably knock the generator and stator windings off,
- Skim/polish head,
- aftermarket airbox,
- SP/Kent/RMKD's intake cam,
- decent exhaust,

Aren't the beet cams the same profile as the SP cams?

Thanks for the info guys.
If I put the RMKD bottom end with a standard top end cams etc, would this be OK? Or do I need RMKD cams as well? Are they geared differntly?
How much am I lookin at for race cams?

It would be ok; get you running but one of the biggest gains is the head and cams.

Think the gearing's the same it's the profile of the cam lobes that are different.

Cam's turn up every so often on here or eBay ranging from £100 (if you're lucky, I was) and about £270.

If you give Roger a call and see how much he charges for re profiling an L model cam it might be a cheaper option.

Nope :smt004

If you want same profile as SP then fit ZX-4 , H1 static cams

On some Ls owners swap one cam out with an SP but there is no need when any of above give same (just not adjustable but why have only one adjustable cam :smt017 )

If you have an L5a Jap import you should swap both cams for any of the above.

BEET cams are also adjustable - going to put a post up in Workshop as I now have the installation sheets :smt004

SO,

SP (not using adjustability) , ZX-4 , H1 are all the same:

Inlet: open 35 Close 65 Duration 280
Exh: open 57.5 Close 27.5 Duration 265

Any numbers for Kent or others who have made cams for the ZXR ?

Right its been a while, bu eventually have got the bottom half sorted, and on the top. Very tight responsive sounding on the bench. Luckily bike aleady has SP cams on board. Thursday im back in the workshop and will be gettin rad back on and properly fitting downpipes back on. Had a few probs along the way like a camchain going and piston destroying itself, but all looking good now.

Hi Moriman

Slightly off point from this thread but I'm sure you know the answer easily enough as you are the oracle of H's. Does the H1 sp (also known as J1 I believe?) have adjustable Cams? Is the profile and lift different to standard cams or is it simply that they are adjustable. I have a kent cam in my race bike and have the possibility of getting cams from an h1 sp for my new engine and was wondering if they would be as good (or better) than the Kent ones.

Are H sp cams the same as L Sp? Soz I know you pretty much answer this above but I just want to clarify to make sure I'm getting this correct and not coming up with my own made up conclusions

Your wisdom would be much appreciated. :smt002

If you check the online parts finder I posted up you will see the J1 has adjustable too - I got an engine out on veranda.

Don't have my sheets handy for their duration though and don't know what Kent set their cams too :smt017 But some one a while back suggested that they might of had a set of BEET cams in their possession at one time and got a good idea of what to do - pure speculation of course :smt002
