Please Please Please HELP

Post by less_like_you »

I cannot get any power to my bike at all... battery seems ok.... have tried changing the whole wiring loom, regulator for another, fuse box, checked fuses all ok... changed ecu/cdi for another and still no power to the bike... I mean literally no electric at all! Only thing i haven't changed wiring wise is the starter relay... if that was a dud, would that stop all power to my bike like that? By the way earths all seem to be ok too.... Someone please chip in with some advice, I don't want to let this problem beat me!

I think I'd be with RobB on this - check the ignition barrell itself. I had one go randomly on a VFR750 once after I'd stripper the front calipers down - I jumped on the bike to ride home, turned the key, and got absolutely nothing! Took me ages to work it out, especially as I hadn't even touched any electrics!

The starter solenoid can be a pain, and I changed mine a few times on my ZXR400 because of a poor connection to the 30A fuse that's on it - but even then I believe I still had some power to other things like lights (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

I -ing HATE electrics!!!

Nope I haven't tried changing the ignition barrel... That and the starter solonoid are the only two electrical wiring spares I haven't got :'( I just want to get my bike running again....

Then soon as I have her running again I plan on selling my spares on... Loom, Regulator/Rectifier couple of relays and fuse box...

Then sticking a years mot and tax on the bike and selling her too.... Need cash towards a new car... Will be sad to see her go, even more so as I rebuilt the top end about 500 miles ago, skimmed the head replaced 2 valves, 16 valve stem seals, retarded the inlet cam by 1 tooth to increase midrange power, fitted a new cam chain, new head gasket and removed the base gasket.... So.... If anyone is interested in a 17,000 mile Uk model zxr400 L3 let me know lol Never had her on a dyno but shes quick, I've had 145mph out of her and im 13 stone 6ft 1". I believe the carbs are fitted with a dynojet kit too and also has a KnN air filter...

And I F'ing hate electrics too!

Yup, ignition barrel

Take off and strip it down and see if there is a broken connection and solder it up again.

You can verify by unplugging it from the loom , make a jumper cable and hot wire the block on the loom.

Follow the wiring diagrame and you will be able to power up the lights , sound horn , indicators

You can spin up the starter too and manage to get bike running off starter button.

But , I would go with fixing the barrel 1st

Hey MM hope you are well....

When you say the connector block on the loom... Is it the white rectangular block female end is barrel end male end is loom end with 6 spade pin connections?

Any idea on what part of the manual I would find the info on trying to bypass the barrel?

Thank you

LOL, yeah the workshop manual is going to tell you how to "hotwire" your bike :pmsl

But thats the block connector, CHECK wiring diagrame for your bike model but pretty sure the brown is constant power from battery so you can check for power there using a simple 12v electrical screwdriver detector (You earth the top with your thumb and it lights up inside when there is power)

With the barrel freed up and exposing the bottom where the loom wires are soldered on you can also test for power there too, turn key and you should power up the White lead (CHECK Wiring diagrame for your bike model)

Inside there is a "Y" bridge that you are switching across points to power up these leads - this could be fouled up , worn or broke

MM!

Or just get another unit :smt005 BTW I do have a key lock set but gawd knows where in the chaos :smt009

Right heres an update.... Haven't touched the ignition switch yet... I have a live tester that you put on an earth and on to a live with the bulb that lights up.... I have tested the earth points they are good... I have tried testing the solenoid red plug with the 3 wires... The white indicates power both on the wire and pin if i unplug it, but the red and yellow and black and yellow nothing.. if i bridge the two terminals on the starter solenoid it will turn over... even took a reading from the top of the 30a fuse, on the battery side its live and on the opposite starter side its not.. that though is most likely unrelevant...

Moving forward.....

I tried all the wires in the fusebox, cdi, and regulator... no power through any of those... tried the wires on the connection block on the loom for the ignition barrel.... unplugged it, tested each of those... no power there on any either... not even the brown wire thats on its own seperate but next to the block....

ARRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH

help me please lol someone!

It's normal at around 6,000rpm - otherwise, no! You should be reading around 13, I should imagine...

Good news everyone.... After much f*cking about with the bike... I decided to trace the one live wire i did have which was a white wire coming from the starter solenoid back through the loom... moving about 4inches along the loom at a time exposing the wires and pushing the pointy end of the screwdriver live tester into the wire, kept getting a light up on the bulb untill i got so far and it wasn't lighting... went back, stripped all the tape off to find 2 extra white wires that join together and lead off towards the front and back of the bike... well, turns out these had corroded and come apart... and that was on the new spare loom.... So soldered them back together and i had power but it was starting off the lights not the starter button :s But that loom i know came off a l1 import... mines a uk l3

The rest of the parts, regulator, cdi, fusebox and relays were all good as i swapped em all around with my spares and they were fine so were never the problem....

So I then decided to strip down my original loom in the same spot i had the problem on the import loom, and hey presto! the exact same thing with the white wires had happened on that!

Fitted my original loom back on after soldering it all together and it runs as it should and starts off the switch...

So for anyone with a similar problem in future you have a heads up...

Very very pleased now :D

Now need to but myself a new speedo cable so if anyone has one i could buy thats cheaper than ebay please let me know lol :)

Then i shall be giving her a good clean, taking her for mot, sticking on a years tax and she is for sale!

Oh and turns out my mates multi meter is faulty, as it later gave a reading of 19 volts... then when we tested some other AA batterys etc it was reading them up as over double the voltage some even 3 times the ammount... :gamer
