No Worky, please help
Ok, there may be a burnt ZXR for sale if I can't sort this.
I've swapped engine and exhaust in my race bike, reconnected the wiring loom (race), CDI, stuck the fuel pump back on and now can't get the bloody thing to start. There is no spark. The engine turns over; the fuel pump pumps fuel; the pickup spins freely; checked the continuity from start to finish and there's good earth all over the frame and engine. Tried different plugs, different CDI's, kill switch seems ok, battery charged and checked. Got the cbr600 stick mod but had these before swapping the engine and wouldn't think all four would burn out at once??
What can I check from here? Resistances? Voltage levels? etc?

could be you've got a mis match between the CDI and the pick up rotor in the new engine..............I'd put the rotor from your original engine in it along with the original CDI

Hi Cargo, sorry should've said both are RMKD (engine just rebuilt and CDI just done too). Tried with the original CDI and RMKD one. How easy is it to change the pickup? just undo the bolt and take plate out?
I've traced the resistance from the coil poss and negs. Poss reads 2 ohms and Neg 10 ohms. There's a voltage going across the same connections but it's only 3.5(ish) volts on the poss and nothing on the Neg. Seems low?

if you just take the cover off and check that the 4 digit number on the rotor is the same............or different from the original one. Same is good different is bad

If your running the SP CDI the pulsar needs to be a 1223 to send the right signal to get it to spark in time.
H & L engines use the 1189 pulsar so it might have one of those inside - I posted up a thread showing the difference between the two. You can just unscrew the Black inspection plug and rock the bike forward in gear until you see the stamp to check or quickly dab the starter button to spin the crank a bit.
No way it wil ever fire up with the wrong pulsar on and I also think the coils dont get energized at all so no spark. Being an engine swap it is most likely otherwise the cam timing is out 180' and causing much the same effect.

In true Colombo style.... "Just one more thing" There must be a sporadic spark as very occasionally the unspent fuel that's making its way through is ignited in the exhaust causing a minor cardiac arrest in elderly neighbours.

Checked the Pulsar (1189) and tried the standard blue and RMKD blue CDI. The ignition coils/plug caps are in the right order. Tried another set of coils and still nothing, no spark. Just spent another couple of hours in the garage in the whole time just one bang from the exhaust before calling it quits. Engine never sounds like it's going to start.
Davw's just checking on a way to test the pulsar, then back out to the garage.

Been out now and checked the resistance on the pickup, there was no resistance i.e. open circuit. So; took the pickup cover back off and noticed the pickup looked a odd. Got another two engines so took the pick up covers off those known working engines for a look. The one on the non sparking engine was a black unit and the working ones had orange tops on the pickup. Swapped the pickup unit and checked for a spark with an other plug of the head and Bingo! strong spark straight away. Bit late though to fire it up with the straight through exhaust in a built up area, tonight.
Fingers crossed it'll fire up ok tomorrow after work.

Just to put closure on this.
Changed the pickup, stripped and checked the loom but still kept doing the same. Took it to "FatSpanner #44" and left it there for a couple of days. Most likely looks like a bad earth between the frame and engine as it's a powder coated frame.
Started up last night and hopefully get it to Anglesey this weekend

Cheers bobby, just done Angelsey last weekend, brilliant track!!! Both the coastal and international circuits. Also shaved some weight of the bike as there's a bit of the fairing been left in the kitty litter in North Wales.
