fuel pump help

Post by alanh »

just got my zxr track project rebuilt, all ignition etc works, fuel pump works with a + and - connected but when the fuel pump is plugged in to the wiring nothing happens. ran the bike to see if it was just that the pump had achieved pressure but bike ran for a short time (at about 6k shocking ) then cut out, still no fuel pump. im thinking fuel pump relay? which relay is it and does anyone know a way to check? mines an l3 i think
all help appreciated
regards
alan

i think the fuel pump only pumps when engine is running.

not using the tank atm, using another tank that does not have a fuel tap just an open outlet, fuel is feeding through to pump fine but cant hear it working even when engine fires.

i thought mine was feiced to ,i spent days messin with it,there was nothing wrong with it at all, your situation sounds similar,if you can get the motor to run at all for a bit and to pull out the pipe feeding the carbs, but you cant get it to run can you?

join a + and - to the pump to fill the carbs ,plug in the fuel pump again to the normal conector, try to start it ,if it starts plug out the pipe feeding the carbs,if theres fuel pumpin out ,then its not your pump,
the pump makes a wierd noise when the carbs are full.

tried a live to the pump worked fine, spoke to falloffslowly earlier as im buying some bodywork off him and he said it sounds like a needle not seating in the mainjet properly which explains the high revving as the bike is now firing up. would also explain the reluctance to start so going to give the carbs a good going over tomorrow. thanks for all the help, should hopefully solve it :smt003

had a look at the carbs, no blocked jets and slides return freely/needles are nice and free but still idles at 6k :ffs when 'idling' the slides are still closed but they open as they should as soon as i open the throttle and bike revs up as it should just cant get it to drop below 6k
checked inlet rubbers and breather pipes, cant see any obvious splits so doubt its an air leak
any ideas?

Double check for air leaks, especially round the inlets, spray some carb cleaner round them while engine is running, n see if there's any change.

Have u tried another cdi?

have u check the simple stuff like.......choke isnt stuck on?....idle isnt set to 6k? and it is actually idling at 6k not just the rev counter messing around??

no its definitely at 6k revs drop down with kill switch and sounds a LOT like a bike at 6k :smt002 , choke is nice and free, first thing i checked. idle screw is wound right off so the carbs are hitting the stop rather than idle screw. never tried a CDI yet though didnt realise that could cause it, think i know of someone that has one i can borrow, will give that and some carb cleaner around the inlet a try.

I had a very similar problem on another bike i had years ago. Dealer changed the CDI and it was sorted. If you got one to try then thats great as its cheap to borrow something especially if it turns out not to be the problem.

fixed :excited must have been a sticky float or something as i stripped the carbs, removed/refitted mains and reassembled, refitted and ran fine yet i never found any dirt etc. in them :smt017 need to turn idle up a little but had to switch it off because i forgot to refit the water pipes for carb warmers :wanker
thanks for all the help lads
