cutting out and regulator is red hot

Hi all i bought a zxr 400 2 years ago and built it from the frame up but now when its all together and starting it will not stay going the regulator is red hot it will start and run for 5-6mins and you give it a rev it conks out i am at my wits end i nearly cried today because i got a so called bike mechanic told me it was my regulator got a new one got suited and booted and got to the end of the road and had to push it home this is a major sos and will give my first born child{when i have it} to the man that can telll me how to fix the problem. :smt010 going mad taz

I take it that it doesnt start right away once its stopped? Have u tested the voltsge at the battery while running? What u get there should indicate weather its charging correctly or not.

seems to be charging fine is it normal for the regulator to be red hot.thanks

they do get warm, part of their job is to dissipate excess electricity as heat ..

check the actual alternator/gennerator outut as described in the manual .. could be overcharging if its getting V hot . or a short somewhere

pattern reg/rec ? some of them are just toad and fail quickly.
