no prob's, I currently have the newer version with the springs so will just order the same

P.S - If the tensior can just be reset, why would you fit a new one?

because like any chain under tension it slowly stretches. The tensioner takes up the tension and adjusts as the chain stretches, but eventually the tensioner and chain will both reach their serviceable limits. If a new tensioner can't remove the cam chain rattle, then it indicates that the chain is beyond its service limit. the tensioner works with springs which also eventually wear out. Its worth trying to reset, and this is more for if you are doing engine work. As cargo will tell you, they have to be reset when being put back in rather than presuming the tensioner in the same position will work just fine, otherwise engine damage can occur. All things wear out eventually my friend, hence the need to replace.

Also the tensioner ratchet can wear or even break and to it would need replacing and the springs in the tensioner with time will not be so springy.


My experience with tensioners is that the most common fault is caused by refitting it without reseting the ratchet all it takes is one of those very very fine teeth on the ratchet to break and you need a new one

which for the two seconds it takes to reset them means everyone should do it every time

Hmmm, replaced the O ring on th etensioner body and refitted as per your instructions cargo - all good. Went or quick 20k blast and sure enough still got the leak!!

I'm pretty sure it's not coming off the ignition pick up, or the tensioner body itself, and 12mm bolt and washer all seem good. I've fashioned a small catch tank/botle around the tensioner (old coke bottle cut to shape an dtaped to tensioner upside down), and the oil does not seem to end up anywhere else, but after 20kms, i've got about a thimble's worth of oil in the cap of the bottle of my catch tank....

Really not sure what to do now short of taking it to a garage for a look at bya professional, but i'm tight (and trying to learn). Grateful ofr any more good ideas guys???

i had problem with the ignition pick up wire leaking as it has a bonded rubber part as it passes out the casing by the cam chain just above the tensioner the rubber had gone hard and shrunk i used some sealant around it and a new gasket on the pick up casing and now all good.

UPDATE....
Okay, so I replaced the cam chain tensioner O ring and no change...hmmm. Found time to strip bike further, including removal of coolant overflow tank, then revved t**ts off bike whilst sat next to it, and sure enough, found source of oil leak!! Woop woop! It's coming from about 11 o'clock on the the seal between the small right hand casing and the main engine block (directly behind the coolant overflow tank, and leaks onto the camchain tensioner - hence my false diagnosis). Not sure of proper name, but it's right hand side, smaller of the two engine cases (ie, not the one with the oil sight window), I reckon cover maybe allows access to Crank?

Anyway - found the gasket on the fische, but before I order, is it a simple replacement? Drop oil, Bolts off, case off, clean up both faces, apply new gasket, torque bolts up? Does anyone know what torque the bolts should go to? Do i have to worry about anything else? (must invest in a Haynes manual.....)

All help gratefully receieved again, feel like I'm making progress at last.....

Thats the ignition pick up cover you are describing.....................easy fix

Remove cover clean up/remove gasket replace gasket bolt up again....................

Torque is 8.8NM from memory it's in the manual................and watch out for a small rubber camchain guide that fits into the crankcase and the cover it MAY drop out when you remove cover. The bolts are M6 with a 8mm hex head
