Road engine

If one was rebuilding an engine for a ZXR, are there any easy power gains to be had? I'm not talking race prepping which sees a very limited lifespan, just careful assembly and attention to detail?

I.e. is skimming the head to raise compression worthwhile? lightening components?

Not strictly on topic, but I have read that aftermarket air filters for these engines aren't much cop? I assume exhaust however can have a pronounced effect on power delivery? Also, Ive read different ignition units had different rev limits? What is the highest standard one available?

To keep it safe for the road i doubt you'd get much more the 70hp, much of that would come from an exhaust system. The rest of the power would be hours of tinkering for a few hp. The bigger hp bikes are running ram air which means scrapping the air filter which isn't ideal for the road and engine longevity.

So in other words you would not suggest raising the compression a little for road use?

i have read about people removing the 'base gasket' to raise compression slightly.....i dont no how good this is for a road bike though
majority seem to think the standard filters are just as good as the K'n'N style ones and it means you have to have the snorkel removed from the airbox.
yes good race exhaust downpipes will give more power over a standard ones when set up properly with the carbs

im pretty sure mine is 14,500rpm and mine is a blue m sticker uk spec, even the dyno print out only goes to 14,500rpm.........maybe im wrong will have to go out and double check if the weather is good
