Top ten places to save weight ?
What are your top ten places to save weight ?
I have looked at a pic RMKD bike today (sob) and there isnt any excess weight anywhere !
What are YOUR top tips?
I'm going to reduce the size of my rear wheel spacer blocks,machine a hollow in the rear caliper holder. I've looked at ti bars,but the machining looks very expensive ! I've binned the speedo,and I'm having the spacer for it made from aluminium - I've got a Ti exhaust system to save some weight, and dymags (although I now can't use em as I also do Streetstocks).
I am going to try to measure my fuel properly next season too, (as I've normally got enought fuel on board to ride back to London as well as the race distance)and use an NC 30 battery, as it's almost a kg lighter than the zxr batt. I have weighed the EBC discs, and the standard zxr "L"disc is lighter, so I've kept them. I suspect the "L" calipers are lighter than the "H" calipers, but haven't weighed them yet!

Ive been lookin at this too for my new build.
the rear disc has to go, thats one heavy sucker. There was some being sold on here not long ago, BMC? dunno. 40 quid or something. well worth it.
gsxr 4 pot calipers are lighter than the L and the H ones.
flywheel.
the tourque arm could go, with a scooter or similar rear caliper on a altered caliper hanger, like rogers bike up there. ( im gonna have a go at this)
clock bracket is heavy, ally ones from race products are nice and light, about 40 quid i think.
dummy tank and fuel cell. raven performance makes these, and quality looks very nice. dunno how much tho.
I was gonna get a bulk load of ally bolts for everywhere that is not load bearing. I found a place on line that was cheap, have to remember where... might be worth doin a big order if a few of us wants em?
wheel and swingarm spindles are heavy, could probs drill a lot of weight out of them without losing strength.
minimal race loom saves loads
wonder if a race seat unit with race foam is a lot lighter than a race seat and standard seat pod? probs not much init.

the dummy tanks and cell are about £250.as Jake said about loom Ive just done mine and am gonna weigh it soon to see the difference.Oil cooler?

My Streetstocks bike is 72bhp, should be enough, but at Oulton Park I was getting on the gas uphill out of Knickerbrook slightly earlier than a CBR400 which has a fairly standard motor, but it would ease away a few feet every lap.
Looking at the power to weight ratio - I'm 77kg and the CBR rider ( I would imagine

I will get back to 70kg for the season start, (or so I bloody well hope ) but I want to lose a few from the bike too, why should it only be me that suffers? LOL .

For me to get down to 70kg i would need to cut my right leg off!!! In my birthday suit I am 82kg and absolutely no chance of getting below 78 which is a bit depressing. The lad who won the Derby Phoenix F400 reportedly weighed 8.5 st = 55kg. Now that will make a difference!!!! More seriosuly - I will get a price for Ti swing arm and wheel spindles (if i price it for 10 it might be reasoanble) - will post it on here and see if anyone is up for it.

I used to do Karting, and there was a minimum weight for driver plus kart ( I think it was 135kg) which the light guys had to use ballast to get up to.Davw wrote:For me to get down to 70kg i would need to cut my right leg off!!! I'm the wrong side of 80 kg as well, but try as I might I can't keep weigh off me......it must be all the pies I suppose
I did lose a lot of weight off the bike last year by changing the rear disc for one of the BMC jobbies and I also did the rear caliper conversion to have it sit on top of the s/arm and ditch the caliper.
I'll be looking for other ways over the Winter, but I think it will mostly now come down to lightweight fasteners and ally brackets. Failing that, I'll just have to ride the feckin thing a bit harder

Hate to disappoint you guys but your wasting your money trying to save a few grams here and there.........................I can sweat off more weight in an hour in the gym than you can save with lightweight fastners and expensive parts......................If you can reduce unsprung weight there may be some handling benifits.............but
To go faster you need to diet.................and train and lose weight off your fat arses........................................
I reckon 10 weeks on the cabbage soup deit should do the trick.................and the money saved by not eating all those kebabs should pay for a years race entries.
You'll be fitter too and that should help too...........................40 press ups minimum...........to do the Manx properly
and yes I can...................mind you I'm a stone heavier now than what I was for the Manx soon lose that again after Xmas

I can see your point Cargo if its somebody that is overweight then they should start with themselves as fitness makes a big difference.But Surely if you are fit and of decent weight then making the bike lighter will help.God I remember my first few races I was dying on the 5th lap and just looking for the chequered flag.But with a little bit of exercise most days what a difference it made.Dying on 6th lap now

Seriously though, Cargo is making a valid point that it's far easier and more relevant to lose weight off our fat arses first and get fit if you want to go faster. I might be 82kgs, but I'm in the gym 3 times a week preventing myself being more and just as importantly getting fit.
After that though it is down to taking as much weight off the bike as you can and personally I've always been a particular fan of getting rid of unsprung weight first, particularly rotating mass.

Losing weight off yer fat butt is the cheapest tuning you can do...................it actually saves you money 
Been in the gym this very morning......................a full hour on the spin bike tough and exhausting but easy burned off a pie or two
