prominent knocking sound decided to join in with the sweet orchestral sounds of my engine on my way home last night.
im going to pull apart and try to find out what it is, but if youve got any ideas theyd be much appreciated .

Initially i though blowing exhaust, then i realised the rattling sound. Id say cam chain. Get the right hand panel off, undo the pickup coil cover and check how far up the tensioner piston is. Easiest way to check for the cam chain for sure. Is it noisier on the right hand side?

spring catch is rooted and moves freely up and down. put a little wedge in the spring to hold in place put back on bike ta da no noise, no im not leaving in there just to see if it still has clearance enough, not a lot only about 3-4 clicks left.
but im now gonna track one down.

You may as well stick a new cam chain there while you at it given that you've only got 3/4 clicks adjustment left.

Cradleys will sell you a new tensioner....................there are two types yours looks like the older version and is cheaper to buy. But they are so far as my experience goes interchangeable.
