Hey guys, down to the last few problems now. After getting the bike to run it's been running rather poorly. Stripped the bike down again and cleaned her out. Sorted out the oil so it's running clean. Problems are now:

1. The bike is 'hunting'. (Have cleaned the carb's to within an inch of theirs lives)
2. Very poor throttle response. If you twist the throttle it takes close to 2 seconds for the bike to reponsed. Thought it was the cable but its snapping on the carb's as quick as i'm twisting.
3. Want to try a sealant between the carb mounts and the cylinder's. Will a high temp. liquid gasket do? I need to re-seal the altenator cover anyway

All the shims, timing, etc was all done before i crashed and the bike was running spot on.

these symptons all seem to point to an air leak or incorrect carb settings (mixtures, needles etc)carb rubbers are common for leaking so id check them and also check where the air box bolts onto the carbs, theres a moisture collector on the side of the airbox left hand side make sure thats emptied out and the filter is ok.
some people use hylomar to seal up there carb rubbers, i tried but didnt work so i just brought some more, best way i think. its mainly where they bolt down onto the head its like a raised 'o' that makes the seal these go flat with age and there for leak.

as extonyg says try resealing the inlet rubbers, and put some new plugs in if you aint already.
Don't forget people there is more to the zxr400 than this forum... check out www.zxrworld.co.uk also.

Hey, have re-sealed between the cylinder and rubber carb mounts with liquid gasket. Also have sealed between the air-box and the carb's with the gasket as well. Hopefully this will sort the leak. I'll try taking the air-box apart again.

I have a K & N filter in it and washed all the river crap out of it but I never re-oiled the filter. Could this been allowing too much air through and therefore messing the mixture up? Again, before the bike went in the river it was running as sweet as a nut.

P.S - My fan work's when you by-pass the fan switch, so I assume the switch is bust. Anyone any idea of price? Had a quick look on the net but couldn't find one.

P.P.S - I have fitted new iridium plugs about a week before I went for a swim in the river and have checked them all and all are firing well

The fan switches are expensive! I seem to remember getting a quote for £50 ish from Cradley's. Are you sure it's gone? easy to check if you have a multi-meter.

How do I go about checking the fan switch?

You need to submerge the bottom half in a pan of water, heat the water and measure the resistance between the two prongs. When the switch 'turns on' at around 80C the resistance will drop. There's more info about it in the manual.

Checked the fan switch, its spot which is good as cradley quoted £63!. The fan also works so i'll check the thermo and the water temp. sensor tonight. If there ok then might be a loose wire somewhere.

Sorted the air leak with the liquid gasket but as I have not re-oiled the air filter yet I can't be sure of anything. :smt017

Right, the fan, fan switch and water temp sensor all work. therefore my suspect is the thermostat. When at room temp. the multi-meter will 'beep' when the body and the inside are touch. Does this mean that the switch is open at room temp. therefore bust? Or does this mean it's closed and ok.

Hopefully it's a bust thermostat as cradley quoted £20 which isn't too bad. I don't really want to be stripping all the wire's back :smt009
