99 octane petrol

can you run the zxr on 99 octane petrol ive just drained the petrol out on the zxr and manged to get a bit of rust and grime out the tank iam hoping it will help with the spluttering on my zxr the carbs have been clened to within an inch of there lives theres no gunk in there i took a samlpe of petrol and put a few water drops on top just to see how it looked and you cant relly tell theres water on top it kind of mixes with the petrol so iam hoping a brand new batch of petrol help with the spluttering and may as well try a full tank of 99 octane petrol just hope the weather holds up its been carp in derby relly heavy showers and dont fancy taking a fully rebuilt zxr out in the rain lol

it will be fine but wont make any extra power without increasinng the compression or advancing the ignition.

Not much point if you ask me.

thats ok iam not relly botherd about the extra punch just want it to run better no spluttering do you recon i should just use a fresh batch of normal petrol ?

I've only tried the 99 stuff a few times and so haven't really got an opinion.

I can tell you 100% that in my findings Shell V-Power gives the best mileage and smoothness and can make an audible difference. BP Super is next best. Texaco and Esso Super are 'ok' but don't have anywhere near as profound an effect as Shell or BP.

This experiment has been run by me on all carbed bikes I've had over the last 5 or 6 years, and I NEVER use 'normal' petrol because it's a false economy.

I would also rather run out and push a bike than put supermarket fuels in - even if I had open fractures in both legs and the roads were salted.

Only since they messed up with the fuel thing a few years back. Petrol prices in supermarkets are usally alot more consistent than big brands too.

I notice i difference between 95 and 97, but nothing at all between 97 and 99. As rene said you really need a tuned engine to see any benefits.

And as i said, bung in 97 with a shot of redex, if you dont notice the difference after id be very surprised.

my ninja and my ER6N have only ever had super unleaded (optimax / V power) in them as I have owned them since new. My car gets whatever normal fuel, but if I'm doing a long journey I put v power in because you do the the extra miles out of it, and it cleans out the engine. Saying that, neither of my bikes have carbs though...

I mentioned all mine were carbed because that seems to be the main difference with people who say it makes no difference whatsoever - i.e. they've had injector bikes.

I can't say if they give more power, but the throttle response is definitely crisper and the bike revs smoother, and the 'super fuels' allegedly use better detergents and are generally a higher quality of fuel. I have no reason to doubt this.

You could well be right about just using it for shorter journeys, but I'm glad you have noticed a difference on long runs!
