Doing an oil and filter change...

Right, I am going to do an oil and filter change for the decent weather.

What is the best oil to use? (I know it needs to be 10w40) - Would a Fuchs oil be best? Synthetic? Semi Synthetic?

And also, can the oil filter be removed and replaced by hand, or do I actually 'need' the oil filter tool?

Truth be told any good semi syn will do nicely

Oil filter will come off with careful use of a screwdriver and a hammer.

When you put the new one on smear some oil on the rubber seal and tighten it by hand as tight as you can

The Oil filter should come off in your hand easy enough. Remeber though.

a good quality 10w40 semi synth will be just fine - I've got Castrol in my gixxer.

as Cargo says, smear a little oil on the o-ring seal on the oil filter when you fit the new one, and make sure that you dont over tighten the filter. Whenever I'e done mine, its come off in my hand just fine.
You should also fit a new sump washer, and dont over tighten the sump plug - 25Nm springs to mind, although I haven't checked - so don't quote me on that!

I think the only filter that's ever come off by hand was the one that was unscrewing itself and pissing oil everywhere! Always smear the oil on... never works anyway...

Most of that's down to being able to get access to it - being a lazy barsket most times I turn up with scorching hot downpipes, whip one side panel off (if that), and try and get at it from there! A proper filter tool is a great help, but most are a total rip-off that you can make yourself.

I also very rarely fit a new washer to the sump plug. This is the area you have to watch out for though - DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN THE SUMP PLUG! It will crack your sump.

Don't ask how I know.

The smear of oil on the rubber seal helps get the filter tighened. I've never got one off by hand yet (except when the wife was away on a Saturday night).

I have a strap oil filter tool but ll it does is crush the filters.
If the tapping it round with a screw driver doesn't work I've been known to just stick the screw driver right through it and lever it off that way

you're ok til you find the oil filter aint gonna unscrew and you just tear through the filter body.

What sort of price should I be paying for some good oil then?

Local garage has both new pads and oil filter available to collect today, so gonna grab some oil while i'm there (If it aint too expensive) - He only stocks FUCHS oils and lubricants....

you might want to look at opieoils deals mate see if its any cheaper to buy the oil & filter but it will cost you a fiver as its only open to paid up OC members still might work out cheaper?
