removing oil cooler

There seems to be more and more members appearing that are racing the ZXR400 so i've created a special section just for you to show off results, discuss meets etc etc.

I sometimes need to swap oil coolers from one engine to another and I made a little ally plate and rubber gasket as a temp solution to keep the oil in.

If I was removing the oil cooler never to fit it again I'd get the holes wielded up

Because about 5 years ago I bought an engine that had no oil cooler with it so when I swappd engines and I didn't want to drop the oil out I needed something to keep the oil in when I moved the oil cooler.
It's also easier to get the engine sitting up straight on the bench when the cooler is removed.

Hi,
when i removed the oil cooler, i just blanked it off with a rectangle of 6mm ally with 4 holes drilled in the right place to match up with the holes on the sump, then put 3 bond (engine case sealent), on it, bolted it on, and that was it.
i only used it as a short circuit bike, and changed the oil every meeting tho'.
if you pm me e-mail address i'll get a pic off to you.
cheers

Can you just remove this cooler without harming the engine on hot racing days then?

The two metal oil lines that run from the engine to where the flexible lines are have been tapped on mine, simply has a bolt in it.

If you ask any engine builder tuner...and we have because my son's ZXR400 came with the oil cooler removed...and they will tell you never to remove the oil cooler for racing and they should know. Who will question the knowledge and experience of the likes of Phil Seton, Bob Farnham or Andy and keith at Dynotech. My son broke the lap record at Cadwell last year with his in place. 1 minute 37 secs...an obscene time if you ask me!

That's what I can't understand, why would you remove an oil cooler in the first place? A cool engine is going to run better any day.

I know a few people say dont take them off, i havent on mine, but why not tho? its not as if zxr's overheat when there going, generally the rad needs taping up most of the season because they run to cold
the only time they overheat is in the holding area/grid when an oil cooler aint gonna help anyhow...
And its one less thing to leak! a bit of weight loss, and think of the saving in oil!
