Removing base gasket

There seems to be more and more members appearing that are racing the ZXR400 so i've created a special section just for you to show off results, discuss meets etc etc.

Removing base gasket

Post by zxr4000 »

Hi all,

I've heared some racers have removed their base gasket and skimmed the cylinder head. My question is how the cylinder base is sealed without this base gasket?

Thanks

As there are oil galleries thru the split I try to use some of the new fancy sealants, and very sparingly. The last one I did, I used kick-ass loctite (910 I think) and never had any bother but will be using Dirko this time - any decent motor factor should have it. I seems to be the modern car equivilent of yamabond. Thinking of it - yamabond would probably do the job as well!

Hi All,

I just heared that removeing the base gasket could damage the piston rings because the barrels are lowered and the rings touch the upper part of the barrel that hasn't been used (ran in) ever before. Sound plausible as my engine is from 1998 with appox 15000mi..

Anyone removed the gasket on a used engine or does it rquire the barrels to be honed on a used engine?

Thanks

good point mate but surely you should have youre barrels honed anyway if your removing the top end, even if the same piston and rings are going back, this is what ive always been told from a early age on car and bike engines, ideally i would replace the rings at the same time too
