Restricting ZXR400
I'm buying a ZXR400 next year when i turn 17 and will have to restrict it to 33bhp. i was wondering if there are any dangers to restricting the bike to 33bhp as my friend seems to insist it will break the bike. would anyone also know the best way to do so as i have heard you can get washers or restrict the revs electronically. cheers

It does no harm whatsoever to fit the 33bhp restrictors....................so far as I know the only way to do it is with the washers in the inlets.

hi steve! im 19 and bought my zxr about a month ago, i did the same test you did. unfortunatly theres not alot you can do about spending the money. you see everywhere i went bike garages say they must order them and fit them, they wont just buy them for you they demand to fit them aswell. so i decided to be a law abider and let them buy the restricters, they are just 4 round bits of metal that go over the carbs with small holes in them.. ive got them all on a cabel tie in the garage, BUT you can tell them not to fit them and give them the labour money for it, if your worried about your bike. i think it came to about £300 all together and you get to keep the restricters + the certificet to show the old bill if you get pulled over.

The certificate that they give you is as useful as a chocolate tea pot. It means !!!NOTHING LEGALY!!! Whatever F1 international might try and tell you. By law the police HAVE to prove YOU wrong it is not your place to prove the bike is restricted it’s the police jobs to prove it isn’t. The only way this can be done is to dyno your bike what’s expensive and time consuming so the police will only bother doing this in extreme circumstances e.g. you crash and kill/injure someone.
Secondly there is no law on HOW your bikes has to be restricted. You could pull off 3 HT leads and your bike would be “restrictedâ€. You could put a stop on the throttle so your only able to open it ¼ of the way and this would be restricted. There are also electronic rev limiters you can buy that you can turn on and off (set it to 4,000 rpm and your bike is now restricted to like 10bhp). As long as it’s under the legal power to weight ratio your fine.
Personally I never bothered restricting my bikes in anyway, of course I don’t recommend this because if your court then you’re in big trouble, or god forbid you hurt someone and your insurance refuses to pay out your in even bigger trouble. But a lot of riders do get away with it…Up to you if you think the risk is worth it or not.

It is much much much cheaper to have someone build the washers for you. The dimensions of which are dead easy to find!! I'm sure i've seen them on here before. Or if you know someone with a certificate, the dimensions are on it.
As has already been said, the certificate is bollox and a total waste of money!!! I'm pissed off i got ripped off when i restricted my old VFR. The law only states the bike needs to be restricted, you don't need to be able to prove it, if you crash, mechanics will inspect the bike and will easily be able to see it was restricted.
However if you were stopped and asked to prove it, you would simply need to get a dyno print out. They are about £25 i believe

Not sure how its cheaper for someone to make it. Other than the cost of buying 1mm thick ally sheet and your time cutting it to size and drilling, whats so expensive about it?

Cheers guys for all the help! it will all come in handy. i was just wondering while we are on the topic. What is the best way to restrict the bike while keeping it as fast as possible. My dads mate owns a garage so i can get them at trade and fit them myself for free would that be ok ? cheers

This is getting stupid for a start we're discussing a bike that is not yet bought........................
If you want to be totally legal you will have to restrict your bike to approx 33bhp............................it matters not how you do it 33bhp will only let your bike go so fast............................. period.
Unles of course you reduce the weight of your bike until it weights nothing........................
