can swap?

Post by stef »

Hi guys, i have done a search before you say it, but couldnt find anything even though i know its probably around here somewhere.

Basically my bikes run out of MOT, there is no way in hell it will pass with the current can, and i have no spare. I've been searching high and low for a standard can (L model) but cant find one, funny thing is there were loads on ebay before i thought i needed one.

I've found one for an H model, will it fit my L downpipes? please say yes.

Otherwise, anyone got a standard can i can buy off them?

Or a link to a cheap road legal one? not that keen on spending £100 for a can with a removable baffle just for the MOT, i like hte one on there.

Thanks

H and L cans are interchangeable, only difference is the colour/material of the sleeve..

stuffing half a coke can with a hole stabbed in the bottom of it down the can will quieten it down a bit too .. just make sure there's no "not for road use" markings on there :)

Sweet, i'll probably buy this one im looking at then.

Mine did have not for road use on it, so i went at it with the dremel.

Looks shite now, have to get the wet and dry out as its fairly obvious whats been done hehe.

How would you get the coke can out once its stuffed in the can? Sounds risky

Cheers for the help

old trick for "quiet" track-days :)

just send your bike in with the can on, it might pass, mine did and it said not for road use on the can.

harley dealers used to be good at mots with not for road use pipes. Untill about two year ago every aftermarket pipe was illegal but they wouldn't have sold one if they didn't let them through mot.

running the bike is not part of the mot so they cannot fail u for having a loud can

the "not for road use" tag is a prob, but i heard that if u cover it with a piece of tape, the mot tester is not allowed to remove it

as they are not allowed to remove anything from the bike

Not true. In fact complete and utter bullocks.

The tester is required to ensure that the exhaust is suitable - so they can (and will) fail you for having a system with rusty holes in it, and they can fail you for having a race can on.

If it's a non-original system and it's not stamped as 'not for road use', then the tester is allowed to use their discretion. If it's a bit louder than standard, they'll probably be fine - there's no actual noise test. If it's making the plaster fall off the walls of the workshop, then you'll be very lucky to get is passed.

still, they dont actually have to run the bike during the MOT ..

normally (in my expeience) they go by whether they heard you coming when you turned up ..

but yeh, if its got "NOT FOR ROAD USE" stamped on it, its a fail ..

and if it looks like it isnt OE and might be loud (stubby etc) they can start it up to see and will fail it if its "excessively" loud, or "significantly louder than the OE exhaust"

depends on your MOT tester, most of the criteria is open to interpretation by whoever is doing the mot and some places are real monkeys where as others use a little more commonsense. My bike is always mot'd with a race can on because the tester i use doesnt think it's worth sending me home with a fail just for a can, it wastes his time with the re-test and mine. he just asks if i have a standard can at home.. :smt002

The trouble with having an open mind, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

the MOT tester will always start the bike to hear how loud the bike is

"Exhaust system - complete, secure, correct type and not too noisy"

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Ow ... G_10016070

Im yet to own a bike that dosnt have a full race system on it and fail an MOT. The TL is very loud at tickover, proper shakes the ground and it passed. All deepends on the garage.
