What is the best wheel size for zxr400

Post by will#224 »

I ask as i'm considering some dymags, all sizes available, what fits, which would suit tyre sizes best.

Cheers

afaik, nearly everyone runs stock sizes,

with 120/70/17 front 160/60/17 rear being the preferred tyre sizes (stock is 120/60/17 front)

no other 400 has fatter tyres (standard) anyway, nc30's being on 150/60/18 rears, rvf's and fzr's same as zxr (i think)

slicks are a different matter, but im guessing you'll be running treaded tyres ? in which case its supercorsa's, although there's some using 090's and alpha 10's

you "could" go half inch wider on the back, but, 180's are a bit big, and 170's arent very common, and 160's suit the stock rim.

as i expected, my question was more over the rears, wets i get at a good price would prob be 165 which is realistically 163mm, was wondering if that would fit, the michelin sm rear which has a cut pattern is 16/63/17 but is again around 163mm, list rim sizes for the rear is 5 inch, guess it will just steepen the profile on a 4.5 rear.

I used dunlop 170 rears on a 5" rim in supermoto which gave superb grip. The weight of the bikes and power is comparable.

wet's do come in weird sizes.. as do inters, i've got some kr364's on the way which are 165/55/17 i think .. be fine.. i also have a back wheel with a 170 on it .. havent tried it though, and its not a common size in the tyres usually used..

having said that 160 alpha 10's are getting tricky to source atm.

ive heard a lot of good things about the alpha 10s, you reckon they are good too? better than super corsa?

a few of my mates have gone over to manx with kr364 and thats it. Ive run them on my supermoto before and love them

5 inch for the dymag rear mate.
Ive had me feelers out for some for a good while, more the front than the rear, but a set would be nice..
Now, i finally found some, and was considering parting with the LARGE amount of money they demand. but then held a standard front in one hand and the dymag in the other....and you know what? there was, to my surprise not a hell of a lot init.
i just did'nt think they are worth the money for the marginal weight saving and its effect.
they do look nice tho

FWIW, apparently the rear is no lighter than standard. However, I beleive a wider rim (than standard) will let something like a Supercorsa Pro work to it's edge, and even better for a 165. (My 160 SC Pros didn't get to the edge and I had fairing scraping both sides). So from that, I would think you'd get better side grip, but in all honesty, I don't know. You'd probably have to be a world class rider get any beneifit from it. For example, Mr Mike 'Spike' Edwards did a 1.16 second lap aroung Snett on an bog stock 60 bhp engined FZR with a 150 rear Dunlop 209GP shocking

Edit. PS and a 51s lap around Brands Indy shocking

FWIW AMS have some (or did V recently) marchesini wheels for a zxr .. very tatty and in need of tarting up, but cheap ..

no idea how they compare to dymags/OE for weight though.

No, I haven't seen any times, but that is mighty impressive, if it's dry tomorrow lap records may be on the cards then winks
I can't believe there would be any damp patches though :smt002

Edit: just had a look at mylaps.com, can't see anything like that :smt017 : http://www.mylaps.com/results/showevent.jsp?id=343859

EDIT again, just seen it :smt003
