if you're on a tight budget mate i wouldnt bother with the KnN, they are barely better than OE, infact if you leave the intake snorkel in the airbox they flow worse than a stock setup. sound a bit better and can be cleaned .. thats about it.

check what main jets are in there, they vary from year to year/market to market and many have been dynoed and set up in the past and then had a stock pipe put back on. On stock headers, #95 mains wont be far off, the can makes little difference as the link pipe is baffled.

looking at the pics again i think its definitely a "bitsa" i dont think L model ZXR's had the light grey engine cases, and the black frame would be gloss if it was OE.

Its definately a bitsa. Ive done a quick oil and filter change today and booked it in for the tappets and carb balance with a local bike mechanic who has done some work for me before and ive asked him to give be a honest opinion which im not expecting much. The exhaust is so bloody loud i dont think its going to get under the 94db limit at a track and the headers are on the way out. Its been accident damage as well, rad mount broken and exhaust downpipes bent which caused me a little grief as it made getting the oil filter on/off a little tight so i will be on the look out for a replacement system. So on the shopping list is a track fairing and seat unit, air filer and plugs, and exhaust. Im hoping that after a carb balance and tappets check it should sound sweet, its a little (understatement) lethargic when revving it up, it sounds like its running without oil at the moment which it certainly isnt becasue ive just filled it up. It does sound proper rough though. If its had a service and oil change in the last 10k i would be amazed. Ive just found a thread and found that the frame is a L1 model but the engine appears to be a L3 version. Its definately a bitsa. Need to see what the V5 said, i checked the frame number but not the engine number i should know better :smt013

Right, its in at the workshop being worked on, in a few days i will know the full extent of the damage to the engine weather its cost effecrive to repair or replace. Im thinking its going to be a replacement engine !!!!

Bugger, cam chain needs replacing, cam chain adjuster is fully max'd out and two of the exhaust valves are tight. Its going to be cheaper to buy a replacement engine than fix all that. Anyone got a spare engine for sale, its only going to be used as a track day bike but low mileage one would be nice. The speedo shows 36k miles on my bike so its not surprising its a little worn.

theres only a couple of hours work needed to sort that, non are major problems either.

how good does that look?? that is well green and clean! have you repainted the frame?

It surprised me how clean its starting to look, The race fairings are from A16 race stuff which i got off ebay, They took a little re-jigging to get the rear mounting holes to line up but nothing major anf the front upper mount needs a slight bracket being made to get it fitted tip top but you expect that with any after market fairing. It was made and gel coated green, but he can do any colour if you ask as i understand. I think i paid £225 + P&P and they took a week to arrive. The frame Ive just left and the wheels are messy but i m not to bothered. The cam chain still rattles like anything but it will do for 3-4 track days then i will replace it for next season. I sat on it yesterday and its allot bigger than my NC30 and feels allot more comfortable than my old ZX7R. Ive put a UK spec (Blue sticker on top) CDI on but its still resticted to 10,000rpm. It has MPH speedo so any idea anyone????????????

I ACTUALLY FOUND A PRIVATE ROAD WHICH IS AN ACTUAL PRIVATE ROAD THATS ABOUT 1KM LONG THE OTHER DAY IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE WITH A DUAL CARRAIGEWAY DOWN THE SIDE. IT MEANT I COULD RAG THE 400 WITHOUT FEAR OF PISSING ANYONE OFF OR DRAWING ATTENTION TO MYSELF. IVE BOOKED A TRACKDAY AT BRANDS FOR THE MIDDLE OF NEXT MONTH AND I NEEDED TO KNOW IF SHE RAN. GOOD NEWS IS SHE DID BUT THAT BLOODY RESTRICTED TOP END IS A KILLER, 10,000RPM AROUND THE 100MPH MARK AND IT WENT FLAT, MY MATES CBR600 LOOKS A HEAP OF toad BUT IT FLYS IN COMPARASON. IM REALLY HOPING THE UK SPEC CDI WILL UNLEASH THE BEAST, IM HOPING THE 10-14K MPH REV ZONE IS WHERE THE REAL POWER IS. I ALSO NEED TO FETTLE THE SPARE ENGINE I GOT THE OTHER WEEK AS THE ONE IN IT SOUNDS BAD, CAM CHAIN NEEDS DOING. STILL LOOKING FORWARD TO GETTING MY KNEE DOWN EVEN IF I AM WEARING A NOVICE BIB. IF THE BIKE RUNS AS IT SHOULD I GOT A FEELING THAT BID WILL BE DITCHED ALONG WITH THE NOVICE GROUP RATHER QUICKLY.

basically there aint any power till 10,000rpm, it tails off a bit after 12,500 but with the right jetting and setup can hold strong into the red.. get that 10k restriction off and it'll be a different bike.
