carb prob

Post by diesel »

hi guys. ok, firstly i must apologise. i had to strip my carbs right down and forgot to take photos for the workshop section. ill try better next time lol. i had BIG probs with the zxr. IF it ran it was terrible, so i stripped the carbs right down. all i can say is it looks like someone has wanked all over the jets and internals. loads of gooey toad everywhere. anyway, all claeaned up and running now. can anyone here suggest an additive to help alleviate this problem. i use high octane fuel, its an sp model and has flatslide carbs with scorpion end can. dunno if that helps but you never know.

cheers anyway.

ps; sorry baz. ill do my best to get photos next time. im stripping the bike down in winter so ill do you a load then ;)

Baz you took the words right out my mouth!!

That stuff that 'looks like someone has wanked all over them' as you quite beautifully put it, is what happens when its been standing for ages.

But yes, run a tank full of petrol through with a shot of redex and that should sort them out no probs :smt003

IMHO Redex is the worst thing you can put in carbs.

It will cause the rubber diaphragms to perish.

If you have that much emulsion in your carbs, you are doing something very very wrong with your servicing/cleaning/running/storage of the bike.

I'd recommend cleaning the carbs with carb cleaner and then soaking the jets in solvent for a few mins and rinsing clean. TBH I usually just chuck the carbs (minus the jets) in a bucket of parraffin and then jet wash them clean. Leave to dry in the sunshine.

You'll then need to balance the carbs again and make sure you set the float heights correctly. ;)

Does it really cause the rubbers to perish? I didnt know that. Maybe its not the best thing then?

But a shot of it once in a while wont hurt that much will it?

i'm sure redex would disagree with you on that one. seing as they sell a version specifically for carbed engines.

Modern engines don't need upper cylinder lubricant. ;)

Its snake oil.

I didnt think it was a lubricant, as far as im aware its just a cleaner that attacks gum build up and also cleans your valves.

We are talkign about the same stuff here? The stuff i use is the red 'Petrol Redex Fuel system cleaner'.

On the back it says:

Harmful deposits build up on the carburettor and in the fuel system which can reduce the vehicles engine performance. Regular use of Redex helps to:
-Clean carburettors and the fuel system
-Reduce exhaust emissions
-restore performance
-increase fuel economy.

Personally ive used it since ive had a bike as my dad swore by it and ive never had a problem with it causing any damage.
