I do admin on an other site.......... http://www.ttwebsite.com with the same forum type

What happens there is that new users can NOT post messages until they have been activated by me or my fellow admins.
We look at the usernames, profiles, e-mail addresses and the website they register then make a chioce activate or delete.

To date we have had NO porn or other such rubbish posted on the forum since we started and only one person has been deleted in error.

I'm still feeling my way round all the functions of admin but I've well and truely sorted how to zap spammers and porn mechants..

I'd be happy to do the same job here

yeah a lot of people wont register if they have to have their account activated first, i'm gonna install a mod whereby registered users can't post URLs until they have made about 50 posts that should stop them.

We allow guest to view the forum and read messages but they must register and be activated to post anything.

TT website has been around for some time (years) and we still have a steady flow of new members. Our problem is that we have kids and familys that read the site and if a spammer posts a message or a link we risk it being seen by children.

There does seem to be a time slot when all the rubbish appears usually between 1.00 am and 9.30 am perhaps the forum can be set to only allow new users outside of those times. Working night shifts I get home about 5 am and there always 5 maybe 6 spammers then one of the other guys always logs on about 7.30 and she gets the rest of them.
During the day all 3 of us are watching.

I'd agree that having to wait to have your account approved is a big put-off. In fact generally I'm not a fan of over-admin'd forums.

Personally I'd:

- Turn off guest posting (if it's still on). Registering is hardly difficult if you are a real user.

- Machine proof the registration process (ie require entering a code from an image, etc). Most spam comes from scripts not people (cos it involves effort). I bet there's a phpbb mod to do this.

- Give a few people rights to delete posts - I don't think the level of spam on here is that high that it would take a great effort. Just work on the principle of deleting it quickly rather than trying to block every possible way it can be posted.

image verification is already installed, guest posts haven't been disabled mainly because we used to get a lot of genuine guests posting, i also am against not allowing guests to post although the only guests we get nowadays are spammers, i'll install the 2 mods i have in mind and see how it goes.

why would someone register then advertise such things do they get paid or somethin? if ppl wana see that then im sure they could google it (as i frequently do by accident lol)
anyway just goes to show that this site is well maintained to be fair.
