Airbox gunk and pipe missing.

I had the tank off when I did the throttle cables and noticed that I had a pipe missing and a lot of gunk had built up around the pipe connection. It was a mixture of oil and grit.

The grit I think is just stuff off the road sticking to the slight oily bit.
The oily connector is the circle and the arrowed pipe seems to be missing. Everything else is there! Is this a problem or should it not make a difference?

Thats a drain for the airbox, air condenses in the airbox and water forms, obviously this needs somewhere to run out, along with any excess oil on the filter. That tube thats missing has a plug in the end which seals it up, i remember pulling it off and the pipe flicking up and covering my face in oil and water cos i didnt know at the time what it was.

No idea if it HAS to be plugged up or not but my mate has the same on his mondeo and forgot to plug it back on and it ran like toad. But if its meant to be there then it might be best to get the pipe and plug, it could be sucking air straight through that hole and not pass the filter on the way into the engine, which is obviously not a good thing.

and if kawasaki put a plug in it then it should be there!

Thanks Peeps, Gonna get it plugged up tonight but won't be able to try it till Saturday. Will let you know if it made a difference!!

hi,

dont think it will make alot of difference in terms of rideability, just think the plug is there to stop the shite from running out all over your engine and fairings.

Let us know if it does make a difference though

Been out on the bike a few times and the new pipe hasn't seemed to make any difference except the bike seems a little quiter and smoother, but that is probably just in my head.

It has stopped crap leaking down the inside of the frame though which is good.

Sorry to change this subject slightly, but if that pipe was full to the brim with water and oil etc, cud this cause the bike to run like crap? Especially on a wet day? Had a problem with my bike cutting out and when I took it apart found that pipe was full? As far as I know emptying that was all I did to the bike apart from a bit of filter cleaning etc but seems to run fine now! Could that have been the cause?

you are supposed to drain it every so often, if its built up the induction could draw the crap into your carbs and cause running problems, might be worth spraying some carb cleaner through your carbs.

looking at that drawing of the airbox assy, mine is different. It has the gauze, then the filter frame (but not the bit inbetween) then just the filter ontop of the frame (which is melted to fook). Anyone know whats going on there?

Sounds like someone has lost the bit inbetween and put it back together wrong. All the frame and the (what looks like a toast holder) do is keep the filter bit the right shape.

but you definitely need the gauze on the engine side of the filter, i believe it stops the filter catching fire if any flame goes the wrong way.

Yep have used a bit of carb cleaner already! This was ages ago that I did this but just wanted to check!

Im wonderin if my bike is running a bit rich? Theres a lot of soot built up on the end of the can (scorpion with baffle removed) and occasionally it feels a bit boggy. Also the other day when I was going round a roundabout I heard a sort of deep "puffy" noise when at very low throttle? Dont know if thats anything to do with it?

got soot on my micron aswell. Its to be expected. you could spend all your life changing carb set up to reflect daily pressure and humidity changes. Not worth it though.
