Hot Starting Problems

Post by SplaTZXR400 »

Well, im having hot starting problems, the bike starts first time as normal when cold, but the last 2 days if im doing short trips and try to restart when warm it wont start. but might eventually splutter and start when left to cool. wots goin on? cant be hot carbs im sure, iv stripped it down and they dont feel warm. iv ran 3 times hotter than it shows n never had this problem. ran perfect during the summer. iv pllued the leads out n they are all sparking on my home made jig, not tested the actual plugs yet tho, got dark.

The last couple months iv had trouble with the lights killing the engine when it was idling, it was suggested on different forums both these problems are coz of the reg/rec. but it stil charges at bout 14.6v at any rev range even idle. can any1 offer any help please? :smt017

The hot starting is a common problem for the ZXR, but its totally random as to which bikes do it, ive had two ZXR's and niether of them have had hot starting problems.

hmmmm, thats something else no one knows, when it starts.

I take it the spark was a nice healthy big fat blue spark? Not a weak and pathetic yellow one?

If thats ok i guess it would be the carbs. Id run some Redex through a few times and see if that clears things up or makes it better. You can buy small bottles for 99p from Halfords which treats a tank, saves buying a big bottle.

Hopefully that will sort it.

thanks for the advice, i thought that 2. obviously its taken a hard whack somehow, every1 else iv spoken 2 says it sounds carb related. maybe sticky float or choke, which is likely, coz it runs fine just wont start, n ye i checked the spark, nice strong blue 1's and easily jumps the 7mm gap specified in the haynes. so definately mechanical. i was worried that maybe something in the top end buggered up, like a loose shim, but i was told if anything was loose or damaged it would make a hell of a noise.

Wheres the temp gauge needle, roughly, when it gets to the point where its refusing to start?

The trouble with having an open mind, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

not sure exactly how to explain it. theres about 5 notches i think on the temp gauge. the fan comes on at notch 3 at halfway. iv ran it til notch 4 before, very hot and its always started, never hasn't. but now if it gets to notch 1, just onto the red, so its warm, thats wen it dont start.

Mines started doing this this year. i figured it was prob down to running a bit rich as my bike was set up for a full micron and now has normal pipes on. doesnt effect performance as far as i can tell but is really annoying when you try to get off the torpoint ferry and everbody laughs at the guy bump starting his bike. feckers!

if you find out what it is exactly let me know as nobody i know seems to have an answer.

but it wouldn't be hot if you were gettin off the ferry would it? no idea how my mixture is, its set on 1 3/4 turns out n runs well. n nice tan plugs. well i think iv solved it, tried i all day 2day n it started straight off the button with no throttle. tried it at very hot temperatures and it stil fires instantly! all iv done was replaced the spark plugs, cleaned the contacs on the fuel pump, think thats about it. no problems anymore! yay! well time will tell. stil got the problem with the lights tho, so fekkin annoying, stil cant figure it out.

Cheers will give that a whirl and see what happens.

ferry only takes 5 mins from plymouth to torpoint, so after hacking through plym its still roasting when you get to the other side. :smt003

ye well spoke 2 soon, so now it seems it will fire up fine, when all fire, went 2 startit 2day, now it seems like its not firin on all 4. sounds like it kinda firing every other one if that makes sense. n not enough 2 start it. last time i had this problem it was HT leads were loose, so il check that, but hope its not the IC igniter. and the light stil cut the engine! :smt010 :smt013 WHY DOESN'T ANYTHING FUKKIN WORK HOW IT SHOULD!

Right ok, did some tinkerin, i cleaned the plugs, some metal contacts and check the HT leads, 3 of them weer fine, but 1 had some white crusty toad on it and was hard and swolen bout and inch down. and it was covered in i assume water but it was like dirty oil. wot is it? anyway cleaned it and got it running like a dream, all lights on and still idles, revs dont drop, and it even startss hot with all light on.
Now the problem is, i did a'rain check', got the hose and squirted it. in about 2 mins of idlin with all lights goin, it started to almost stall, to me it sounds like it momentarily or tempermentaly fires on only a couple of cilenders. which u dont notice wen u rev it. i dont no wot else to try really, waters gettin in somewhere electrical fast.

thats corrosion on the ht lead mate, sounds like waters running down the lead somewhere, if its not firing properly then the plugs will get fouled with fuel and carbon deposits.the bike will splutter if your blasting it with n hose pipe as the mists of water enter the carbs through the air filter it will dilute the fuel, shouldn't cause it major problems tho unless your riding through a lake.
Don't forget people there is more to the zxr400 than this forum... check out www.zxrworld.co.uk also.

ye no idea how water got in but i cut the manky bit off now. it fires nice. no i squirted water on all the controls on the dash and bars and the loom under the seat, not the junction or cdi tho, that would be dumb, the loom under the tank and the carbs were dry i checked them, its definately electrical. and im sure its either the controls or the loom under the seat by the frame bit. coz thats wot was wet wen it cut out.anyway done a little bit of tinkerin, again. its hopefully gona rain 2nite and il try it 2moro to c if its behaving..
