carb balance ?

Hi iv got my bike running now,

Done

Valve clearences
New oil and filter
Airfilter
Spark plugs
Fuel filter
Coolant

Iv been riding it around it seems fine just a bit of a pain to start at times, I have had the carbs of on a few occasions and i think i need to get the carbs balanced.

How difficult a job is this iv read the guide on here and a few others, seems as though im connecting some pipes and turning screws to there all level, only thing im struggling to think of is how to supply fuel to it as i have no spare fuel line and dont want petrol to go evreywhere

Im fairly confident have removed my engine before and resinstalled and built it back up again

just rest your petrol tank onthe back seat, connect the fuel line, turn the fuel tap on and that should be fine...was what i did.

its easy to balance them, follow rob's workshop method and you cant go wrong :D

yeah iv looked on the workshop guide,

and could try that just dont want it to fall of

got a morgan carbtune, looks like a decent bit of kit

question though in robs guide is says

"you will notice that there are small ‘taps’ on the pipes beneath the gauges, these are to help damp the movement of the gauge needles as, when fully open the needles will flick around like anything. All you do is do the tap up and the needle movement will start to slow down"

am i correct in that this is for the guages for rob is using ?

My carbs have restricters you fit to calm it down ?

Yes those taps are specific to my gauges.

Not sure what you mean by restrictors other than the 33bhp ones? Looking at thier website it seems they arent needed, i suppose the mercury is heavy enough on its own to damp the movement.

They dont contain mecury anymore, they come with restrictors for each hose to dampen it

yeah lol

One more thing is do i need to use the adaptors that come with the kit, i have 4x 5mm and 4 x6mm adaptors and the setup video i just watched says it depends on ur bike if you need them

but from the your guide rob it looks as though i remove the 4 pipes from the carbs and attatch the carbtune pipes to the correct places ?

I am having a lot of difficulty with this

Iv connected evreything up and when i even touch the screws with a screwdriver or turn them it sends the revs flying, i cannot sync the carbs as all its done is reving up

help ?

i set the idle speed to just under 2k rpm, then i cable-tied the throttle-rotating-bit with the 2 cables on it, i tied that down to another part of the carb body to keep it from moving.

that helped me, if not what you can do is dont use a ceable tie, make a small adjustment, then if its reving too high, turn the idle adjuster down until revs drop, then turn idle adjustment back up to where it was before and go again...tedious but gets the job done.

ps if you do it this way you will probably need to have the fuel tank connected as you will defo drain the float body's.

im confused why cable tie the throttle ? will this stop the bike from reving ?

Yes, because when you are pushing on the screw its opening the throttle as its attached to it. A cable tie is a good idea but i just use my thumb to stop it turning.

As for adapters Im not sure what yours look like but you shod just need to press the rubber tube onto the spigots.

zxr 400 doesnt need the end adaptors.

i guess some bikes have a screw fitting, so the adaptors are for that?

I did it i just kept turning the idle down as i was turning the screws, all done now :)

re: fuel supply - never been keen on perching the tank with the engine running, so I use a portable gravity feed fuel tank. I made mine from an HDPE bottle that used to contain strong alkali. Cut the bottom off, made a hanger out of stiff steel wire to suspend it upside down like a giant funnel, fitted a fuel tap to the screw lid and a fuel line which connects to the bike. Cut the hole in the bottom inside the base so that it leaves a lip - makes it more rigid and prevents vibrations causing spills. You can buy these things for about £20 off the 'net but I just like making things!
