We all know that prices of ZXR400s are hardly astronomical and if you look at list prices in the popular second hand guides you could get very depressed about what you're likely to get for your pride and joy if the worst came to the worst and you were looking at an insurance payout. But there is something you can do to protect yourself if you have a particularly good example which you believe to be worth top end. The bike now qualifies for post-classic insurance policies (depending on the model) and some insurers also offer 'agreed value' policies. These can be a good choice if you want to be sure you're going to get back the value of your individual bike.
I've got my insurance through Carole Nash and they offer 'agreed value', assessed by their own team in conjunction with VMCC advisers. I recently submitted the required 4 photos of my bike, photocopies of receipts for modded parts fitted, an advert for a similar bike being sold by a dealership, with a claim for an agreed value of £1500. I decided on this figure as it is at the top end for an L4 and I believe my bike is in top-end condition. I've had several people in the trade tell me without asking that they believe it would fetch a top end price of £1500. I've had this value agreed by CN with no quibble, which gives me a bit more peace of mind.
So, if you're not happy with the book value for your bike and believe similar ones are fetching more it may be worth looking closely at what insurance options are open to you to protect your bike better. As an older bike book prices are poor and may leave you sitting on a big loss on a standard policy.

Re: How Much Is Your ZXR400 Worth?
When I had my accident not so long ago, the 3rd party insurers (aviva) had no idea how much it was worth. I listed the value at 2k they looked at the prices from ebay and took into consideration the mileage (less than 20k) and gave me £2300 for the bike (L9) because it was in 'showroom condition' before the accident. (i then bought it back for £230).
Thanks for the advice on another insurance company though.. currently the bike will cost me too much to reinsure (its just a toy for fun after all) so i am looking around for cheaper and better deals.

hi
how much isit worth what do you want to pay a dealer has had a zxr400 up for sale at 3200 towards the end of last year it went up to 3500 he sold it last week
for 4495 the price of bikes is going stupid just sold my kr1 for 3500 got a second one on e-bay which runs brilliantly but has never been looked after propley
till i cleaned it up is selling well a dealerr has just told me he will give me 2500 for my zxr400 se he must be able to sell it for 3000
i have had this bike ten years and it has less than 3000 on the clock this is genuine as it was hardley used as i had other bikes i have had to sell my other bikes as i cannot ride due to ill health but this is better than money in the bank

Re: How Much Is Your ZXR400 Worth?
how it stands now id have too pay them too take it away
i brought it for 300 and now i can double my money just selling her how it is .....truest saying is ....its not what you know its who you know and when a dealer has one for lets say 3k a bloke down the road is selling the same one if not a better model for half that price
unless im buying a brand new bike i wouldnt bother going too dealers maybe because im a tight cu*t but id rather get a bike and some nice bits for it or new gear then pay it too a dealer knowing how much he probably paided for it then again anything is only worth what people will pay for it so thats why theres loads of dealers about because of theres loads of jackass'es about who have doe too burn

"good" is a matter of opinion...its a 90's bike...styling is purely up to you, but its a nice bike, dont make it look like some wannabe-toad-looking-need-for-speed-ricer-pile-of-crap...

Re: How Much Is Your ZXR400 Worth?
Bought mine from another ZXRWorld member for 900 quid, in the same condition as above but with less miles i think.
Since then i have chucked a nitron shock on there, steering damper, braided lines, major service done and some other stuff that i cant remember.
I still need to plonk the 4pot nissins on.

Re: How Much Is Your ZXR400 Worth?
Going to start riding my SP400 -94.
I have never insured it the 6 years that I had it so I called my insurance company but they couldn't give me a real price.
A guy came and looked at it and read the registration papers and I got it insured for £5.300
I told him that money can't replace the bike and he agreed.
I need to pay £670 for one year. Funny part is, next year it's 20 years old and I only need to pay £190 for a full year
