camshafts

Hi guys, I got a zxr 400 to use for track days toward the end of last year - this alledgedly had a tuned motor with SP cams. Now checking it out I find that the cams in it don't seem to correspond to either standard or SP Cams, as the height is about a mm. less than that qouted for either in the manuals. Altho the timing is adjustable by way of slots (in plates spot welded to camshafts) which bolt to the cam chain sprockets. This seems to suggest that it may be some sort of tuning kit, but it seems strange that performance cams would have less lift than standard ? Can anyone tell me what these camshafts might be, or advise on timing ? Any advice appreciated.
