I fancied doing a bike up over christmas, thought it would be fun/helpful etc, and so this weekend am off to pick up a gsxr400 project.
Sounds like its in ok nick, will put some pics up if over the weekend and might start a build thread..
Also am considering stealing RedexRobbs paint scheme for his zxr400 cos it looks wicked! Hope you dont mind!

Here she is
1992 GSXR400, has no tax or mot, starts but only just, revs to 2k but no higher, needs the carbs doing. On the upside the milage says 8000 (but this is prbably a load of bull as theres no mot's to back it up!), it's got a polished frame, good tyres, new chain and sprockets, bodywork is in pretty good condition with no cracks or major scratches.
When I get back from Uni im gonna strip it, fix the carbs, and consider a wicked paint job something like Rob's white zxr!

Laquer?? didnt use an laquer mate, lol.
The only problem ive get at the moment is the tank where its started to rust through now, the rest of the bodywork is fine apart from the odd mark where dirt has clinged to the surface. Got a it of petrol on it ages back, went a darker shade of white after i wiped it with my glove but other than that no problem really. In full time job now so should be getting it properly painted spring next year.

Got cracking with the gsxr today, took all fairings off, tank off, rear wheel off and genrally poked around to see whats what. It is surprisingly clean actually and under the fairings theres hardly any rust or anything. Currently have taken over my parents garage (3 bikes in there now!) so they're not too happy!

Fitted a neon tube light to make seeing things easier, ended up cutting the wrong wire and plungedthe whole house into darkness! so spent most of the afternoon rectifying that! But its all good now so i have a sweet area to work in.
Planning on painting the wheels gold cos they are all flaking and crap, can i easily remove the tyre from the rim or do i need to take it down the local kwikfit/garage to get it taken off?

as long as u can break the bead and you have some tyre levers u should b ok
but tyre garages by me charge about £10-£15 to change tyres and balance so it may b easier to take to a tyre fitter
gem

Well here's the current state of the bike!
Im in unfarmiliar territory and am photographing EVERYTHING and labelling every single wire hose etc!lol
Have removed most brackets/metal parts and have treated them all to a coat of satin black paint looks really good(will post pics)
Carbs are out and currnetly being set up (a right shag!)
Callipers I propose black/white writing
Subframe Gold!
Radiator silver
My old man reckons it'll never go back together, he has no faith in his Design & Technololgy A level son!lol

Have been getting busy after a hectic xmas!
Here's some of the parts i had painted, not all of them are there some are out of the picture drying, gives a reasonably nice finish
I then decided to tidy up the rear subframe with a coat of paint (to match my proposed wheels!) despite the fact that you can only see an inch or so if it when the panels are on. Anyway degreased it, rubbed it down with wire wool, and sprayed it gold, came out really nice!
Then to tackle the wheels,
Started like this all flakey and peeling
couple of coats of nitromoors later
and the (nearly) finished front wheel! I got bored and so stopped here!
Oh what fun this is lol

Next job is to paint the downpipes, cos a little rust is coming through, ive undone everything where the headers meets the engine but cant get it to pull out, are they usually this stiff/tight? Should i just use brute force to get them off lol?
